Growth is rarely comfortable because your brain is wired to favour familiarity over uncertainty. When it comes to food and nutrition, changing lifelong habits can feel uncomfortable, but that discomfort often signals adaptation, not failure. Research shows that sustainable behaviour change is built through repeated small actions that gradually become automatic, strengthening new neural pathways and improving long-term health outcomes. Every nourishing choice is an investment in the person you’re becoming, not just the body you have today. Progress isn’t about perfection—it’s about consistently choosing what supports your future self, even when it feels unfamiliar.

This isn't a post against GLP-1 medications.

For many people, they are evidence-based, life-changing medications that improve blood glucose control, reduce cardiovascular risk in appropriate populations, and help achieve clinically meaningful weight loss.

But here's the question I keep coming back to...

Why do so many of us need them in the first place?

Our weigh gain recently, is influenced by our food environment, sleep, stress, muscle mass, hormones, gut microbiome, medications, genetics, socioeconomic factors, and the way our modern world interacts with human biology.

GLP-1 medications can reduce appetite and support weight loss.

But they don't automatically rebuild muscle.
They don't restore gut health.
They don't correct nutrient deficiencies.
They don't resolve poor sleep.
They don't teach sustainable eating habits.
And they don't remove every underlying driver of metabolic dysfunction.

That's where nutrition becomes essential.

A food-first approach can help support:

🥩 Adequate protein intake to preserve lean muscle mass. +🥦 Fibre and polyphenols to nourish the gut microbiome.

🥜 Micronutrients that support thyroid function, energy production and metabolism.

🏋️ Resistance training to protect muscle and long-term metabolic health.

The goal shouldn't simply be losing weight.

It should be building a healthier, stronger, more metabolically resilient body.

As clinicians, we shouldn't be asking only,
"How do we help people lose weight?"

We should also be asking,
"Why did the weight accumulate in the first place?"

STEP 1 trial: Once-weekly semaglutide produced substantial weight loss when combined with lifestyle intervention. PMID: 33567185

Most people understand that food affects health.

Far fewer realise that the environment around us can influence how we respond to that food.

The reality is that our bodies were not designed for the thousands of synthetic chemicals we encounter daily through plastics, air pollution, fragrances, pesticides, personal care products and household cleaners.

This doesn’t mean we should live in fear.

It means we should understand biology.

Environmental toxins may influence:
• Gut microbiome composition
• Intestinal permeability
• Thyroid function
• Hormone signalling
• Mitochondrial function
• Oxidative stress
• Nutrient requirements
• Methylation pathways

This is one reason why two people can eat the same diet and have very different health outcomes.

Nutrition remains one of the most powerful tools we have.

But nutrition works best when we understand the terrain in which it’s operating.

Food first.
Testing before guessing.
Root-cause investigation.

Because healing isn’t just about what you put into your body.

It’s also about what your body is dealing with every day.

Your Thyroid May Not Be The Problem.

One of the most common things I hear in clinic is:

“My thyroid tests are normal, but I still feel exhausted.”

And honestly, I believe them.

Because thyroid health isn’t just about the thyroid gland.

Your thyroid depends on:
✓ Adequate iron stores
✓ Selenium status
✓ Gut health and nutrient absorption
✓ Healthy conversion of T4 to active T3
✓ Balanced immune function
✓ Stress resilience and inflammation regulation

I’ve seen many people focus solely on TSH while missing important pieces of the puzzle.

Iron deficiency, for example, can impair thyroid hormone production and utilisation, and is surprisingly common in people with autoimmune thyroid conditions and coeliac disease.

Selenium is another critical nutrient involved in thyroid hormone metabolism and antioxidant protection of thyroid tissue. Research suggests selenium plays an important role in thyroid function and immune regulation.

This is why a food-first, root-cause approach matters.

Sometimes the question isn’t:

“What’s wrong with my thyroid?”

It’s:

“What is preventing my thyroid from functioning optimally?”

Before adding another supplement or changing medication, investigate.

Test.
Don’t guess.

Because symptoms are information, not inconveniences.

“Symptoms are not the problem. They are the body’s attempt to tell you where the problem lives. The goal isn’t to silence symptoms. The goal is to understand why they appeared.”

In today’s world, we’re often taught to manage symptoms through medications rather than investigating them.

Fatigue? More coffee or an energy pill or drink.
Bloating? Avoid another food or nsaids.
Brain fog? Push through or SSRIs
Skin issues? Apply another steroidal or nonsteroidal cream
Thyroid symptoms? Increase medication.

But what if these symptoms aren’t inconveniences?
What if they’re messages?

As a functional clinical nutritionist, I see symptoms as clues. Clues that may point towards nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar imbalances, gut dysfunction, inflammation, chronic stress, immune dysregulation, hormonal imbalances, or underlying thyroid dysfunction.

The body is remarkably intelligent. It rarely does something without a reason.

This is why I believe in a food-first, root-cause approach. Before guessing. Before adding another supplement. Before chasing another health trend.

We investigate.
We test.
We connect the dots.

Because healing doesn’t begin when symptoms disappear.

Healing begins when we understand why they appeared in the first place.

Nutrition goes beyond prevention.

Nutrition is often one of the first places we can look when trying to understand *why* the body is struggling in the first place.

Because nutrients don’t just prevent deficiencies.

They help run every single process in the body.

Think about it:

✨ Vitamin B1 (thiamine) plays a critical role in glucose metabolism and has been studied for its role in diabetic complications (PMID: 14608063).

✨ Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, including blood sugar regulation, stress response, sleep, and muscle function (PMID: 29480918).

✨ Iron doesn’t just affect energy. It impacts oxygen delivery, thyroid function, cognition, and hair growth.

✨ Vitamin B12 supports methylation, neurological function, red blood cell production, and energy metabolism.

✨ Omega-3 fatty acids help regulate inflammation, cardiovascular health, and brain function (PMID: 12442909).

This is why I don’t see food as simply calories.

I see food as information.

Information that tells your hormones how to respond.

Information that tells your immune system whether to inflame or regulate.

Information that tells your cells whether they have the building blocks to create energy, repair tissue, and maintain health.

This doesn’t mean nutrition is the answer to everything.

But it does mean that before we jump to complicated solutions, we should ask:

👉 Is the body receiving the nutrients it needs?
👉 Is it absorbing them properly?
👉 Is it actually able to use them?

Because nutritional medicine isn’t about chasing symptoms.

It’s about understanding the physiology underneath them.

Food first.
Testing when needed.
Targeted support when appropriate.

Your body has one main priority: survival over optimisation.

And when stress becomes chronic — emotionally, physically, or nutritionally — your body shifts into a high-alert energy strategy.

What’s happening physiologically is not random.

Research shows chronic stress and poor nutrition can disrupt:

* insulin sensitivity
* cortisol rhythm
* mitochondrial energy production
* blood sugar regulation

When these systems stop communicating smoothly, the body can no longer move between “rest and repair” and “energy and output” with ease.

Instead, it stays in a constant survival pattern — prioritising immediate energy and protection over long-term balance.

This is why people start to feel:
wired but tired
crashy after meals
dependent on caffeine
emotionally reactive
and exhausted even after rest

The key insight is this:

Your body isn’t weak or broken.
It is adaptive.

But when adaptation becomes constant…
it starts to feel like survival mode 🤍
