A Path To Follow

A Path To Follow A Path To Follow Inc. is a newly registered charity providing Living/ed Experience Mental Health Advocacy and Peer Support Services.

At A Path To Follow, we support the mental health of young people and families through a unique advocacy and peer support model, using lived experience and professional experiences to help navigate mental health and foster independence. With a team who hold a unique blend of qualifications and experiences as service users, carers and professionals in the sector, this service was founded to support

young people and families in a way the current system does not. We envisage a connected community where young people and families support each other in their mental health journeys. We hope to support families to achieve this by keeping young people connected to community via pairing them with workforce peers who have living/lived mental health experiences. We seek to support families with mental health advocacy and peer support to make their mental health journeys less isolating and ensure their voices are authentically heard in a service system that finds it hard to listen. The service is flexible and personalised according to a family’s needs, using an Intentional Peer Support framework to guide best engagement and support of peers. Young people, from approximately 11 years of age are connected to the community by pairing them with a living/lived experience Youth Peer Support Worker. We meet them where they are and walk beside them as they determine their own paths forward. Service navigation, advocacy, referral guidance, emotional and practical supports are provided to parents and families in their Family Peer Advocacy and Peer Support Program. Whole of family challenges are also supported with our Single Session Family Consultation Service, where practical plans are discussed, set and reviewed as families journey through complex life situations. This support can be ongoing or short term in helping families to navigate a complex service system.

If this is all I get done today, it has to be enough.

For those of you who are in caring roles; professional, personal and/or community you might know this level of fatigue?

I like to throw in a dash of social masking (and wine) to really make sure the start of the week is hard...

Time to turn the care inward I suspect. This week's focus in on food. What are you doing to turn the care inward this week?

Walking with you.

Yesterday was an important meeting for multiple reasons:

πŸ’™ I got to co-host with one of our longest supporters, Rachel of Beaumaris Secondary College , who I met when we initially started and raised money for in 2013.

πŸ‘£ I got to introduce two important youth referral partners Headstart Au & Poppy Support Services to the school community.

πŸ’™ I was able to introduce another two important mental health service options for young people in Kathryn Green Coaching & Mindful Mentors & meet the amazing Priscilla of Concordia Music Therapy.

I felt good after chairing the meeting; something I have not felt in "speaking" for some time.

Thank you Wellbeing staff of the Bayside and surrounding areas. We see you continue to work hard in the best interests of our young people!

Those of you following our Journey will know the last few months have been challenging.

Getting up before 6am and meeting with this bunch of peeps has not been one of those challenges. In fact, they are part of the reason I am coming out strong on the other side!

Thanks First Class Moorabbin.
If you need more connection (and business), reach out and come and meet the team.

(UPDATE- Yep, a long one; not just a pretty photo)

If you have not guessed, I am still feeling a little deflated and stuck;
πŸ˜’between ceasing as a charity and becoming a sole trader (again)

πŸ’ͺ🏼between feeling like a failure and celebrating my resilience to keep going

🀯and between the struggle of mental and physical ill health that has plagued my last few months.

Then I reach inside and channel my boys:
πŸŒ‡To see the positive, create my own adventures and enjoy the sunsets.

πŸ‘£To practice resilience, continue to think deeply and show the world what people with mental health challenges can achieve.

πŸ‰πŸ’•That I have a right to be who I am within a community that accepts the authentic me and that being sensitive is not a weakness, but a superpower

I am still here, quietly supporting our current families, and accepting new ones. Just need some more time to slowly return.

p.s - if you know of anyone who requires a cosy, unique space to rent steer them my way.

Although marketed at kinship carers this intro into trauma and behaviour is suitable for parents and any workforce members wanting to know the basics.

With Jaime of Child Trauma Consultancy you will learn how trauma impacts behaviour and simple tips to inform your responses.

Oh and it's super cheap for a limited time.

πŸ’™πŸ‘£

For every foster and kinship carer who has quietly wondered: "Am I doing this right?"
You are.

And the fact that you're asking that question is actually evidence that you care deeply about getting it right.

Caring for a child who has experienced trauma is genuinely one of the hardest things a person can do. It's exhausting, it's often lonely, and the usual parenting advice often doesn't work β€” not because you're doing it wrong, but because these children need something different.

On Friday 22 May, I'm running a 60-minute online session to help foster and kinship carers understand what's really happening beneath the behaviour they're seeing β€” and what actually helps.

βœ… What trauma does to a child's brain β€” in plain language
βœ… Why the usual approaches often miss the mark
βœ… Co-regulation β€” how your calm becomes their anchor
βœ… What to say (and what to avoid) in the hardest moments
βœ… Self-care that actually fits into a carer's real life

πŸ“… Friday 22 May | 7:30–8:30 PM AEST | Online | AU$33

Whether you're brand new to caring or you've been doing this for years β€” this session is for you.

Big thank you to Kristie for your kind words. This is why we do what we do and we couldn't do it without all the support you give The Sixth Child.

We’re so grateful for your support and for recognising the impact these donations make. Being able to help provide footwear and bikes to young people who need them most is what it’s all about β€” and reviews like yours mean more than you know.

We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience πŸ™Œ

πŸ“… Weekly Presentation – 30 April

Join us at BNI First Class Moorabbin for our next member presentation.

Next week’s feature presentation will be delivered by Yolanda Alvares from Empowered Parents.

While Yolanda’s work is highly valued by parents, her insights go far beyond parenting. This presentation is recommended for anyone in a relationship with another human being β€” which, as it turns out, is most of us.

Yolanda invites us to look inward while trying to understand what blocks growth and communication with others. A firm believer in change from within, she brings a thoughtful and deeply observant perspective on the human psyche and how we relate to one another.

Expect a presentation that is highly interesting, reflective, and immensely valuable for anyone looking to improve communication and connection in their personal and professional lives.

Visitors are always welcome.
