Most people with back pain have heard at least one of these — and believed it.

But the truth is, pain is more complex than posture, alignment, or a single “cause.”

• It’s not about something being “out of place”
• Discs don’t just slip out
• A “weak core” isn’t the reason your back hurts
• Posture alone isn’t the problem
• And there’s no one “perfect” way to lift

What actually matters is understanding your body, your movement, and your load over time.

At Continuum, we focus on what’s backed by evidence — not outdated myths — to help you move with confidence and build real, long-term resilience.

Awesome news! Physio Thomas has completed and graduated from his Master of Sports Physiotherapy.

This is a huge achievement and reflects Thomas’ continued commitment to refining his skills and supporting athletic populations with a high level of clinical reasoning and care.

For Thomas, sports physiotherapy is not just about treating symptoms. It is about piecing together the puzzle, understanding the root cause, and helping people move, perform and recover with confidence.

Whether you are an elite athlete or a weekend warrior, the goal stays the same: helping you get back to your best.

Don’t start your walk or run cold.

Run through this quick warm-up first:
• Leg swings (forward/back + side to side)
• Hamstring scoops
• Lunge and reach (open/close gate)
• A-skips

A few minutes here = better movement, fewer injuries, stronger sessions.

Save this for your next walk or run.

For Darren, physiotherapy is about more than treating injuries. It’s about helping people understand their condition, navigate their recovery, and build the confidence to manage their health long term.

With experience across community rehabilitation, neurological conditions, orthopaedic presentations and sporting populations, Darren enjoys working with a wide range of people, from elite and sub-elite athletes to weekend warriors and everyday movers.

We’re excited to have Darren on the team and look forward to the care and experience he brings to our patients.

Ask a Physio: Part 2

“Is my posture the reason for my lower back pain?”
Short answer — not always.

Posture can contribute, but it’s rarely the only cause.

Here’s what else matters:
• How long you’re sitting for
• Are you moving every 15–30 minutes
• Your activity levels outside of work
• Sleep and recovery
• Your desk setup

It’s about the bigger picture, not just sitting “perfectly” all day.

Your body isn’t built to stay still — keep it moving.

“By the way syndrome” is when patients bring up important concerns right at the end of an appointment — often with a quick “oh, by the way…”. It can make it harder to fully assess and manage the issue properly. Research shows this happens in around 21% of visits, and overall in up to 39% of clinical encounters. It’s also been found that patients may only recall about 50% of what’s discussed during an appointment, which can contribute to things being left unsaid.

To get the most out of your appointment, come prepared with any questions or concerns you want to cover, and don’t be afraid to raise them early. If something comes to mind later, speak up — your clinician wants to hear it. Clear communication goes both ways, and making sure everything is addressed helps lead to better outcomes.

Exciting news, introducing our new physiotherapist; Darren Fung! 👋

Darren joins the team with a Doctor of Physiotherapy from the University of Melbourne, along with additional training in neurology and disability. He brings a wide range of experience across private practice, public hospital settings, and Community Rehabilitation at Austin Health, where he supports people with more complex needs to regain independence and function.

He has also worked with athletes from Richmond Football Club and Port Melbourne Soccer Club, and loves helping everyday athletes and weekend warriors get back to doing what they enjoy.

"Most people get this wrong when it comes to pain and recovery.

At Continuum, we hear these myths every day — and they can actually slow your progress down.

• Rest isn’t always the answer — the right kind of movement matters
• Strength training isn’t harmful — it’s one of the most effective tools for long-term health
• Exercising with some pain can be safe — and sometimes even beneficial
• Walking alone isn’t enough — strength and control are just as important

The key is knowing what your body needs and our team of experts can help you. Book an appointment with us via our website, link in bio.
