T cells, a type of immune cell in the gut, fall into two major categories: those that cause inflammation and those that suppress it. One mechanism used by T cells to balance these pro- and anti-inflammatory responses is the opening and closing of ion channels—pores in cell membranes through which ions such as calcium and sodium pass. Stefan Feske, MD, a professor of pathology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, wondered if ion channels could play a role in this balance of pro- and antiinflammatory T cells in mouse models of IBD.

Thanks in part to several grants from the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, he has narrowed the list of possible ion channels that regulate this balance of T cells from 600 to about 10. Dr. Feske has demonstrated that blocking these channels results in fewer proinflammatory T cells, which opens up a brand-new way to regulate inflammation in Crohn’s disease, through the use of ion channelblocking drugs.

With preliminary data in hand, Dr. Feske has secured a one-year grant from Takeda pharmaceuticals, which he now hopes to renew or supplement with funding from the NIH.

So true. In fact, we are probably the strongest when we feel the weakest.

There is strength in asking for help 💜

Don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it. It's a courageous act that shows your inner strength. Remember, we all face challenges, and seeking support is a powerful step towards overcoming them.

We'll probably all be inundated with posts of people on what they achieved this year. It can be triggering when things didn't go as planned or didn't feel productive. I think we should remember that we're also in a global pandemic.

It has affected all of us in different ways, some big and some small. So remember that before you judge yourself too harshly 💕

I definitely don't have the mental and emotional capacity to make video or post about "what I achieved". I'm reserving that energy for recovery and rest as I'm not sure if my time off work is even going to be enough for me to feel rested!

It sometimes seem like we lost all progress. Perhaps we have lost *some* progress, but this time we won't be newbies.

This can apply to so many things in life. This is me in some fitness aspects.

I'm taking part in the for the month of September, where our team has to complete 150km of activity (walking, cycling, workouts etc) for Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis Awareness and fundraising money for research here in Australia.
I've been living with Crohns disease for over 25 years now. I have been sick since 15 years old. It is a disease that I don't wish on my worst enemy and we need a cure! For that to happen we have to keep raising awareness and fundraise money for research.

I'm grateful to be much more healthy and strong the last few years than the first years of diagnosis, and super grateful to be taking part in this challenge as this is my first year living in Australia! 🇦🇺

Hubby & I will be collecting kilometres! Anyone is welcome to join our team or donate if they wish to do so. 🔗

Wow this. I do push myself a lot. It's not all bad to have a drive. To strive for something.
BUT we do need to be careful of trying to be perfect. Of being unrealistic with ourselves.

Really been trying to apply this to my life lately. Progress over perfection 🙌🏻

This has especially been helping while navigating overwhelming situations and new chapters.

Sometimes something is better than nothing and actually leads to progress.
