I used to give everything away in these. The whole plan, live, in ninety minutes. I stopped โ€” and the reason isn't what you'd assume.

A protocol handed to a room is the same error as a cream handed to a rash. It treats the category instead of the person.

Fifteen years in, and you can feel the options thinning.

Whenever I tell this story, the part people write to me about is never the hospital.

It's slide four.

Because most people living with this are doing everything right. They're not cutting corners or being difficult. They're following the plan precisely, often for years.

And it comes back anyway.

When that happens often enough, you stop concluding that the plan is wrong and start concluding that you are. That's the quiet damage, and it's the part nobody treats.

Between the ages of eleven and eighteen I saw a lot of doctors. Good ones โ€” some of the best in the country.

Between them, they gave me these three sentences.

Here's what nobody acknowledges about them. Being told that isn't neutral. It isn't information you file away and move on from. You carry it, every day, and it quietly changes what you're willing to try.

Kelly didnโ€™t always feel hopeful.
