Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is the most common inherited , affecting an estimated 1-2 in every 1,000 people in high-prevalence populations, including those of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Armenian and Jewish ancestry. FMF begins in childhood, causing recurring fevers, painful rashes and joint pain. 🔥

Dr Shouya Feng, Prof Seth Masters, clinicians at Monash Health, alongside collaborators in South Korea and the USA, have now discovered it comes down to a mutation in a single gene called CDC42, which changes the characteristics of the protein that gene produces. 🧑🏽‍🔬🧪

This has lead to the treatment of a family who lived with an illness that resembled FMF for over 20 years. They were treated with , a drug that blocks the specific inflammatory signal involved. Symptoms that had lasted decades came under control almost immediately.

Three of our childhood researchers, Ella Erickson, Lynda Truong and Jin Luo, shed their long locks, donating their hair to Wigs4Kids to help provide wigs and essential financial assistance to families in need. 💇🏻‍♀️

✂️ Doing the cutting were Claire Josefsson, a leukaemia survivor-turned-researcher, and Novalie Morris, an amazing 12-year-old girl who is currently battling her 4th leukaemia relapse. ❤️
