Redemptorist Fr Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari CSsR, parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Guayaquil, Ecuador, died on Saturday 17 October while celebrating Mass. A large wooden crucifix mounted on the wall behind the altar fell forward and struck him as he stood facing his congregation. A prayer for Fr Patricio:

God of love,
We give thanks for the life of Fr Patricio,
for the people he served
and the faith he shared.
Welcome him into your peace.
Comfort his family, his Redemptorist family
and the community mourning his loss.
Help us remember the person beyond the tragedy,
and honour his memory through kindness
to those around us.
Amen.

Although he lived as a Redemptorist Brother for only five years, his profound faith, humility, obedience, and generous love for God and others left an extraordinary legacy that continues to touch countless lives.

Three centuries later, St. Gerard’s witness reminds us that holiness is not measured by the length of our lives, but by the depth of our love and faithfulness to God.

Today, 18 October, we celebrate World Mission Sunday and its 100th anniversary, marking a century of prayer, generosity and shared mission since Pope Pius XI established it in 1926.

Pope Leo XIV’s message centres on the theme ‘One in Christ, united in mission’. Catholic Mission , the Pope’s international mission agency in Australia, invites us to reflect on his message and join with open hearts in prayer and support for communities around the world.

At Holy Eucharist Parish Church, community outreach is part of the parish’s DNA.

Patricia, from Holy Eucharist Young Adults, sees it every week. “We’re always there, always working without even mentioning it almost,” she says. Many in the parish come from countries where poverty and homelessness are more visible, and they’ve carried that awareness with them to Australia. It shapes how they look after one another and the people around them.

Holy Eucharist is a Redemptorists of Oceania parish. The Redemptorists have a long history of going to where people are, especially those doing it tough. Patricia and the other young adults at Holy Eucharist carry that on in a parish that celebrates the cultures of Oceania and gets on with serving others.

Loving God, We pray for Pope Leo as he prepares for surgery. Give him peace in the waiting, strength for the days ahead, and comfort in the care of those around him.

We remember everyone awaiting an operation or test result, and those whose illness is known only to a few. Be close to them in their uncertainty, and to the people who love them.

Help us make time for someone who is unwell: to listen, to visit, or simply to let them know they are remembered.

Amen.
