Your baby isn’t “just kicking.” 👶🎈

They’re doing science experiments.
“If I kick... the balloon moves.”
“If I stop... it stops.”
“If I kick again... it comes back!”

This is cause and effect—one of the earliest concepts children learn.

With every kick, your baby is discovering that their actions can change the world around
them. These tiny moments are helping build:

🧠 Problem-solving skills
💪 Body awareness and motor planning
🔄 An understanding of cause and effect
✨ Curiosity and confidence to explore
As children grow, this same understanding becomes the foundation for so many everyday skills.

A toddler learns:
“If I push this button, the doors open.”
“If I stack one more block, my tower might fall”

Later, it grows into:
💡 Predicting outcomes
🧩 Solving problems independently
📚 Understanding sequences and routines
🗣 Learning language and following directions
🤝 Recognising how their choices affect other people

Development happens through play, repetition, and the joy of discovering.

What is Monotropism? ✨

Monotropism describes a tendency to focus deeply on a smaller number of interests or activities at one time 💭

For many neurodivergent individuals, this can look like intense focus, deep passions, difficulty shifting attention, or becoming fully immersed in an activity — but it also comes with so many strengths 💙

Understanding monotropism helps us move away from seeing special interests as something to “fix”, and instead recognise them as meaningful, regulating and important parts of a person’s world.

Supporting a child who stutters doesn’t have to be complicated 🌟

Small changes in how we respond can make a big difference. Giving your child time, staying calm, and creating a relaxed environment helps them feel heard and confident when communicating.

Remember to focus on what your child is saying, not how they’re saying it 🗣️

🌟 MEET MIKAELA 🌟

Mikaela holds a Bachelor in Speech Pathology from the Australian Catholic University (ACU) and is a member of Speech Pathology Australia. She is passionate about providing speech therapy services to both adults and children.

As a compassionate and client-centred clinician, she strives to create a supportive environment where clients feel heard, valued, and confident. She works collaboratively with clients and families to develop meaningful and attainable goals, supporting them to take an active role in their care.

Mikaela’s passion for speech pathology is driven by her desire to help people as well as her fascination with the brain and how it works. This passion and curiosity have shaped her interest in understanding how communication functions across the lifespan and continue to inform her evidence-based clinical practice.

Mikaela has worked with clients from the ages of 2 to 90+ with various presentations including stroke and neurological conditions, early language, neurodiversity and school-aged language and speech. She has also participated in a range of volunteer organisations broadening her exposure to disability, research and alternative forms of communication.

Outside of speech pathology, you will find Mikaela running or on the netball court. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family, particularly when it involves visiting her favourite Asian-style restaurants.

Welcome Mikaela 👋🏼 🥰

If you’ve been thinking about support for your child, now is a great time to get started!

Reading a book with your child is wonderful — but talking about the story afterwards is where the magic really happens. 📖

When we ask children to retell the story or answer questions about what happened, we’re helping them develop important language skills such as:
📚 understanding story structure (beginning, middle, end)
📚 learning new vocabulary
📚 organising their thoughts and ideas
📚 practising sequencing and recall
📚 Analysing the pictures if they can’t remember

These narrative skills are closely linked to later reading comprehension, writing and classroom learning.

Next time you finish a book, try asking:
• “What happened first?”
• “What was the problem in the story?”
• “How did it end?”
• “What was your favourite part?”

A simple conversation about a story can build big language skills for school and beyond. 🤓
