That number feels huge… but what matters more is what it represents.

It means thousands of people are quietly carrying things most people never see.

The advocacy.
The grief.
The guilt.
The broken sleep.
The behaviours.
The paperwork.
The fighting for support.
The loving your child fiercely while feeling like you’re disappearing.

This page was never created to make caring look pretty.

It was created for the parents and carers who are exhausted, overwhelmed, touched out, burnt out, laughed-out-or-they’ll-cry… and still showing up every single day.

A carer impact statement is important.. but it is not evidence on its own.

It helps explain the day-to-day reality of caring.

It helps pull the story together.

It helps show the impact on the family, the carer, and the person needing support.

But if you are putting something in your carer impact statement, you need to ask:

What evidence backs this up?

For example:

If you say your child needs constant supervision because of safety risks, can that be supported by OT reports, school notes, incident records, behaviour support reports, paediatrician letters or therapist recommendations?

If you say you are exhausted, burnt out or unable to keep providing the same level of informal support, can that be supported by GP letters, mental health treatment plans, work changes or medical evidence?

The carer impact statement gives context.

The evidence gives weight.

You need both.

This is where a lot of families get stuck because they explain everything beautifully, but the evidence is not clearly linked to what they are asking for.

Save this if you are preparing for an NDIS review or planning meeting.

Transitions…

“Time to get dressed.”
“Time to leave.”
“Time to turn the iPad off.”

For many autistic and ADHD children, transitions can feel huge.

They’re not being difficult.
Their nervous system is being asked to stop one thing, start another, cope with uncertainty, and shift gears quickly.

And if we’re already stressed, rushed or bracing for the battle, they often feel that energy too.

One thing that helps in our house is remembering that transitions aren’t just about cooperation. They’re about regulation.

Sometimes a countdown, a visual cue, a familiar script or simply helping your child feel safe in their body can make all the difference.

If transitions regularly turn into meltdowns, battles or shutdowns, you’re not failing.

You might just be dealing with a nervous system that’s struggling to switch tracks.

I’ve put my go-to scripts, visual card ideas, flow chart and a plan B into a $9 mini kit because mums need something practical in real life, not perfect theory.

Special needs parents are often told to stay strong, stay positive, keep going, be grateful, advocate harder, explain better, document more, fight louder…

But no one seems to care about what that actually does to our body.
The chronic stress.
The grief.
The guilt.
The hypervigilance.
The exhaustion of always needing to prove how hard things really are.

Burnout is definitely not something another “self-care night” is going to fix.

When your nervous system has been living in survival mode for years, your body eventually starts screaming for support.
And special needs parents deserve support for that too.
