In Schema Therapy, schemas are enduring patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating to ourselves and others, often shaped by early experiences. Today, we're focusing on the Unrelenting Standards schema.
This schema often develops when our core needs for acceptance, play, rest or unconditional love are overshadowed by high expectations and achievement. It can arise in environments where performance, success, responsibility, or avoiding mistakes was strongly emphasised. Caregivers may have praised achievement more than effort, modelled perfectionism themselves, or communicated (directly or indirectly) that love, approval, or self-worth depended on meeting high standards. As a result, we may come to believe that we must constantly strive or achieve to be "good enough."
When this schema is activated, it can show up as pressure, anxiety, frustration, or chronic dissatisfaction. You might notice thoughts like "I should be doing more," "I can't afford to make mistakes," or "This isn't good enough yet." In response, we may overwork, set unrealistic expectations for ourselves, struggle to relax, become overly self-critical, or hold others to similarly high standards. Alternatively, we may procrastinate or avoid tasks altogether because the fear of not meeting our standards feels overwhelming.
While these coping styles may have originally helped us gain approval, avoid criticism, or feel a sense of control, over time they can contribute to stress, burnout, strained relationships, and the persistent feeling that whatever we achieve is never enough.
The Healthy Adult mode helps us recognise when this schema is driving our behaviour and respond with greater flexibility and self-compassion. This often begins with noticing unrealistic expectations, challenging the belief that our worth depends on achievement, and making space for rest, enjoyment, and "good enough" rather than perfection. Over time, we can learn that mistakes are part of being human and that our value extends far beyond what we accomplish.
