I see it constantly being discussed in online groups and I myself get asked the question multiple times a week.
Someone asks what supplement can help with either their own or their child’s ADHD, and the replies roll in, saffron, magnesium, zinc, all offered with the best intentions.
I love that people want to help each other like this.
But my biggest concern here is that, one supplement is never going to be the whole answer, and it might not be because any of those options are wrong.
ADHD is not one pathway it is several, working together.
Dopamine drives motivation. Norepinephrine keeps attention steady. Serotonin regulates emotion, not focus, which is why low serotonin so often looks like meltdowns rather than distraction. GABA and glutamate balance the brain’s calm and excite signals, and iron and zinc are the raw materials behind all of it. Then there is the gut, in constant communication with the brain, shaping everything from the barrier protecting it to the inflammation that can disrupt these pathways altogether.
So when something like a saffron, zinc or anything else has worked beautifully for one person and did very little for another, this is usually why. Different pathway, different need.
I have written a full blog post breaking down each of these pathways and what actually helps, link in bio if you want the full picture.
If you are ready to stop guessing and find out what your child, your partner, or you actually need, we can work together to figure it out.
