What does the future of workplace mental health look like?

The new and report, The Future We Choose, explores the major forces shaping Australia's mental health over the next decade.

We reviewed the report and pulled out 7 insights every employer, people leader and HR professional should know.

Healthy workplaces are becoming an essential part of Australia's mental health system.

“Most workplace conflict does not start with an argument.”
Marney Bowden, Manager Dispute Resolution

It usually starts much earlier.

A shift in tone.

Less communication.

People avoiding conversations they would normally have.

By the time conflict becomes visible, it has often been building for a while.
This is where many teams get stuck.

Not because they don’t care, but because they are not sure how to step in or what to do next.

Early support can make a significant difference.

At Workplace Matters, we work with organisations to address conflict before it escalates, through mediation, coaching and practical workplace support.

Helping teams move forward with clarity, not tension.

“Burnout does not always look like someone falling apart.”
Adrian Harris, Manager C*D and Southeast Region

In many workplaces, it looks like people continuing to show up, but with less energy, less engagement and less capacity than they had before.

What we are seeing more often is the impact of sustained pressure over time.
Workload increases.

Expectations remain high.

Recovery time becomes limited & gradually, people shift from being engaged to simply getting through the day.

This is often where burnout is missed.

Not because it is not there, but because it does not always present in obvious ways.
Recognising these early signs and responding early can make a significant difference.

At Workplace Matters, we support organisations to identify and respond to burnout and workload pressure through practical workplace strategies, leadership support and employee wellbeing programs.

Helping teams stay well, not just keep going.

Our upcoming Workplace Matters session will help Allied Health Professionals strengthen communication, improve collaboration and build more cohesive workplace relationships.

Participants will explore:
• Respectful communication strategies
• Managing difficult conversations

There’s always opportunity before conflict escalates.
You can feel it.
Your intuition and experience tell you things are not going well.
A conversation needs to happen… but no one wants to start it.
Leave it too long, and it gets harder to address.
If you’re leading people or supporting staff, you’ve been there.
That moment where you think… how do I handle this properly?
This session is about what to do next
how to step in early, say what needs to be said, and keep things on track.
You’ll walk away with practical ways to:
• step in before things escalate
• communicate clearly and respectfully
• manage emotions in the moment
• handle tough conversations with confidence

You know that moment when something feels off with a team member…
but you are not quite sure what to say or what your role should be?
Most leaders have been there.

And it is not about having the perfect words.

It is about knowing how to respond in a way that feels safe, appropriate and supportive.
That is where confidence makes all the difference.

In our upcoming session, Compassion in Action: Leading Workplace Responses to Family Violence or Mental Health concerns, we focus on practical guidance you can actually use in the workplace.

You will walk away with a clearer understanding of how to
• recognise when someone may need support
• approach conversations with care and confidence
• respond without overstepping boundaries
• understand your responsibilities as a leader
• contribute to a psychologically safe workplace

This is a practical, grounded session designed for leaders, HR professionals and anyone supporting people at work.

Behind every strong team is a supervisor who knows how to support, guide and listen.

Many supervisors step into leadership roles without ever being shown how to provide effective supervision. Having effective conversations, building trust with staff and supporting teams while maintaining accountability can be challenging without the right tools.

Our Supervision Training for Operational Leaders supports those with supervisory responsibilities to develop the confidence and practical skills needed to engage their staff and be effective supervisors.

4 Week Online Program
Mondays | 10:30am to 12 noon
27 April to 18 May 2026

Delivered by Workplace Matters trainer Carol Wlodarczyk, an experienced psychologist known by participants as the “guru of supervision”.

If you supervise staff and want to strengthen your leadership practice, this training is designed for you.
