Coughing while eating or drinking? Don't ignore it.

Coughing during meals can be a sign of aspiration, where food or liquid enters the airway instead of the stomach. Over time, this can lead to chest infections and other complications.

A Speech Pathologist can assess your swallowing and put the right support in place.

Swallowing difficulties in children are more common than many parents realise, and they are often mistaken for something else entirely.

Two myths we hear a lot:

"They'll grow out of it." Some children do develop on their own timeline, but when there is a genuine swallowing or feeding difficulty, waiting can mean missed windows for early intervention that make a real difference to their safety, nutrition, and development.

"It's just picky eating." Selective eating and sensory food preferences are real, but so are feeding and swallowing disorders. A Speech Pathologist can help work out what is actually going on and what support looks like.

Meet Tom, our Senior Occupational Therapist!

With over 9 years of experience in community and rehabilitation settings, Tom specialises in supporting NDIS participants and individuals with physical, neurological, and cognitive conditions to live more independently.

His areas of expertise include functional capacity assessments, assistive technology, home modifications, and daily living skills. Tom takes a client-centred approach, working closely with clients, families, and multidisciplinary teams to create practical, evidence-based strategies tailored to each person's goals.

Outside of work, you'll find Tom on his road bike exploring new cycling routes or diving into his love of heavy metal music.

Sometimes swallowing difficulties can show up in ways people don’t immediately notice. Simple signs during mealtimes may actually indicate that extra support is needed.

Keep an eye out for:
• Coughing during meals
• Wet or gurgly voice after eating
• Food refusal
• Prolonged mealtimes
• Frequent chest infections
