Friday fun at the zoo ๐Ÿฆ’๐Ÿฆ˜๐Ÿ’›

Alex had such a good time today! I love seeing how much he connects with animals.
He was talking a lot more than usual, being really social and asking so many questions about the animals ๐Ÿ˜Šand having an emu following us around definitely made us laugh ๐Ÿ˜‚ We had a blast!

I can't wait for the school holidays. I have a feeling I'll be spending a lot of time at the zoo ๐Ÿ˜‚ Say hi if you see me there!

One thing I've noticed with one of the kids I support is how calm he becomes around animals ๐Ÿ’› & during the school holidays, we spent some time feeding goats and he absolutely loved it.

Every child is different, for some, it's movement, for others, it's a favorite activity.
And for my little man, animals seem to have a special way of helping him slow down and relax.

I always find it interesting to see what helps different kids feel calm, comfortable and more like themselves. Sometimes it's the simplest moments that make the biggest difference ๐Ÿ˜Š

One thing I hear from parents a lot is how hard those school phone calls can be.

You see the school's number come up on your phone and straight away your mind starts racing.

I've seen how exhausting that can be for families.

The meetings.
The worrying.
The feeling of always being on alert.

If that's you, I just want to remind you that you're not alone ๐Ÿ’›and you're probably doing a much better job than you think.

Like many kids, one of the young people I support loves spending time on the computer ๐Ÿ˜Š

His parents have been trying to reduce screen time a little, so today I introduced a simple memory card game alongside what he was already doing.

No pressure.
No taking the screen away.
No battles.

It didn't replace the computer, but he quickly engaged with me and was really happy to play! We had fun, shared a few laughs and gave our memory a workout.

Sometimes small steps are the best steps ๐Ÿ’›

One thing I really admire about the parents I work with is how much they do for their kids every single day.

A lot of it goes unseen.

So this is just a little reminder to be kind to yourself tonight ๐Ÿ’›

One thing parents tell me a lot is:

"My child's teacher said he had a good day at school, then as soon as he got home, he completely lost it."

I used to find that confusing, but the more neurodivergent kids I support, the more I see it.

Sometimes they've spent all day trying their best, following rules, dealing with noise and holding everything together. Then they get home, finally feel safe, and it all comes out.

It doesn't make those moments any easier, but maybe it's a reminder that sometimes the child isn't giving you a hard time.

One thing I've learned over the years is that it's very hard for a child to learn or listen when they are overwhelmed.

Many autism and ADHD specialists I've spoken with talk about regulation before expectations.

It took me a while to get it. When a child is stressed or overwhelmed, asking more from them usually doesn't help, and it makes so much sense when you think about it. It's the same for me personally...

That's why I try to slow things down, give them space and help them feel safe first.
It doesn't work every time, but I've had enough little wins to know it's worth it.

These days, my first goal isn't progress or trying to improve a child's lifestyle. It's connection, trust and making a child feel comfortable.๐Ÿ˜€
The progress usually comes after ๐Ÿ’›

A little fun fact about me... โšฝ๐Ÿ˜Š

I've loved football (soccer) for as long as I can remember.

As a kid, I was completely obsessed. I played whenever I could and spent countless hours kicking a ball around. As I got older, life got busy and football slowly took a bit of a back seat.

But every time the World Cup comes around, it all comes flooding back ๐Ÿ˜…

One thing I love about support work is being able to share some of my interests and enthusiasm with the kids when it's appropriate and something they enjoy too.
Whether it's football, animals, gaming, nature or something completely different, those shared interests are often where some of the best connections begin.

With the World Cup coming up, I'm definitely getting excited again โšฝ

Some moments with the kids I support really stay with me ๐Ÿ’›

Today at the zoo, one of the kids I support was having a bit of a hard time deciding what he wanted to do next, so I suggested we slow things down for a little bit and take a quiet break in the turtle room.

What always amazes me is how naturally he connects with younger kids around him. He loves showing them things they donโ€™t know yet, guiding them, teaching them little things and sharing the moment with them.

And honestly... you can almost see him regulate himself through that connection.

Itโ€™s actually incredible to watch.

After a little reset, he was ready again and we ended up having a beautiful afternoon together, including some great time on the safari bus ๐Ÿฆ’

These are the kind of moments that remind me how important it is to slow down, observe and truly meet kids where they are at ๐Ÿ’›
