Every child experiences challenges as they grow, but sometimes those challenges become harder to manage without extra support.

If you’ve noticed changes in your child’s emotions, behaviour, sleep, friendships, or school experience that aren’t improving over time, speaking with a child psychologist can provide clarity and practical strategies.

At WPS, we create a safe, supportive space where children feel heard, and we work closely with families to help children develop the skills they need to thrive.

If you’re wondering whether it’s the right time to seek support, we’re happy to talk through your concerns.
Early support can make a meaningful difference.

Bookings are now open for new clients aged 8+.

What actually happens in therapy?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that therapy is “just talking.”
And while conversation is part of the process, therapy is much more intentional than that.

A therapist helps you explore the thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and experiences that may be keeping you stuck. Together, you identify patterns, make sense of them, and develop practical strategies to create change.

Research consistently shows that therapy works through several key ingredients:
• a safe, trusting therapeutic relationship
• evidence-based approaches tailored to your needs
• greater self-awareness
• practising new skills between sessions
• consistency over time

Progress isn’t always linear, and change doesn’t usually happen overnight. But with support, insight, and practice, many people find they become more resilient, more self-aware, and better equipped to handle life’s challenges.

Therapy isn’t about becoming a different person; it’s about understanding yourself more deeply and having more choice in how you respond.

You’ve probably noticed that EMDR is everywhere right now, from social media posts to podcasts and conversations about trauma and mental health.

While it’s become a hot topic online, EMDR is much more than a trend or an acronym, it’s a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process traumatic and distressing experiences so they no longer feel as overwhelming.
By understanding what each part of EMDR means, it becomes easier to see how this approach supports healing: helping reduce the emotional impact of difficult memories while building healthier beliefs about yourself and your experiences.
Trauma doesn’t have to define your future, and healing doesn’t require forgetting the past. EMDR is about helping your brain process what happened so you can move forward with greater confidence, resilience, and peace.

If you’re curious about EMDR, or wondering whether it might be the right fit for you, feel free to reach out to reception to learn more:

NAIDOC Week 2026 | 50 Years of Deadly

This year marks 50 years of NAIDOC, celebrating the strength, resilience, cultures, and enduring contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, while recognising the next generation who will carry forward a legacy of leadership, truth-telling and change.

Mental health is deeply connected to history, culture, family, Country and community. While the ongoing impacts of colonisation, dispossession, the Stolen Generations, racism and intergenerational trauma continue to affect the social and emotional wellbeing of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culture remains a powerful source of healing, resilience and hope.

Connection to Country, family, Elders, language and community are protective strengths that support wellbeing and highlight the importance of culturally safe and respectful care.

This NAIDOC Week, and every week, we encourage everyone to:
- Listen to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices.
- Learn about the histories and cultures of the Traditional Custodians of your local area.
- Reflect on how each of us can contribute to culturally safe, inclusive and respectful communities.
- Celebrate the resilience, achievements and leadership of First Nations peoples, and the next generation shaping the future.

Healing is strongest when it is built on respect, truth, connection and hope.

From all of us at Western Psychological Services, we wish everyone a meaningful and reflective NAIDOC Week as we celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC and this year’s theme, 50 Years of Deadly
