This is lipoedema. It does not have one shape, size or appearance. It can look different from one woman to another and may become noticeable at different stages of life.

For many women, it is about much more than visible changes. Pain, tenderness, easy bruising, swelling and a persistent feeling of heaviness can all be part of the experience. Too often, these symptoms are misunderstood, overlooked or dismissed.

Lipoedema is not caused by a lack of willpower. The affected tissue may not respond to diet and exercise in the same way as other body fat, which can leave many women feeling frustrated or blamed for something beyond their control.

By sharing the many ways lipoedema can present, we hope more women feel seen, understand that their symptoms are valid and feel supported to seek informed medical advice.

This is lipoedema, and every woman’s experience is different.

You may have seen conversations recently about PCOS being renamed PMOS.

PCOS, or Polycystic O***y Syndrome, has never fully described the condition for everyone. Not everyone with PCOS has ovarian cysts, and the condition often involves much more than reproductive symptoms alone.

PMOS stands for Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovulatory Syndrome, reflecting the hormonal, metabolic and ovulatory impacts of the condition.

So why are we talking about this in the lipoedema space?
Both PMOS and lipoedema are hormone-sensitive conditions. Research has suggested that approximately 17% of women with lipoedema are also diagnosed with PMOS, which is higher than the estimated prevalence in the general population.

Like lipoedema, PMOS has often been misunderstood, under-recognised and oversimplified. A more accurate name can help improve awareness, support earlier recognition and encourage better research.

To read more about the PCOS to PMOS name change, you can find the blog linked in our bio.

Do your legs feel heavy, tender or painful? Do you bruise easily? Have you spent years dieting and exercising, only to feel like your lower body never changes?

These can be signs of lipoedema – a chronic condition that is often misunderstood and frequently goes undiagnosed.

If any of these signs sound familiar, our Lipoedema Education Session is a great place to start. During this online group session, you’ll learn:
• Common signs and symptoms of lipoedema
• Conservative management options
• The diagnosis and treatment pathway
• What steps you can take next

Most importantly, you’ll gain information, clarity and the opportunity to have your questions answered in a supportive environment.

Our Education Session is the first step in the Lipoedema Surgical Solution patient journey and can help you better understand what may be happening with your body.

Dr Chris Lekich recently joined Shelley Craft on The Aging Project Podcast to advocate for greater understanding and recognition of lipoedema.

This is an important conversation for women who have experienced pain, heaviness, easy bruising or disproportionate changes in their legs and may have spent years being told to simply eat less, move more or try harder.

In the episode, Dr Lekich discusses what lipoedema is, why so many women are still dismissed or misdiagnosed, the role of hormones and menopause, how lipoedema differs from obesity and lymphoedema, and the emotional impact of living in a body that has been misunderstood.

Most importantly, this episode helps bring lipoedema into the conversation and reminds women that their experiences are real, valid and deserving of support.

We encourage you to listen, share it with someone who may need to hear it, and help us continue raising awareness for lipoedema.

This is lipoedema.

Lipoedema doesn't always look the way people expect.

It can show up in different body shapes, at different stages, and in different ways. For some women it means painful, heavy legs. For others it's easy bruising, persistent swelling, tenderness, or a lower body that feels out of proportion no matter how carefully they eat or how consistently they move.

Lipoedema is a chronic condition affecting fat tissue. It is not caused by a lack of effort. It is not fixed by eating less or moving more.

For many women, one of the hardest parts isn't the physical symptoms alone. It's the years spent feeling dismissed, misunderstood, or quietly blamed for a body that is doing its best to manage the condition.

That's why conversations like this one matter.

The more we talk openly about what lipoedema can look and feel like, the more women may recognise something familiar in their own experience and feel confident enough to seek answers.

If you've been wondering whether lipoedema could be part of your story, our Lipoedema Education Session is a gentle place to start. It's a space to learn more about the condition, understand common symptoms, and explore what support and management can look like.

The responses we have received so far have already been incredibly valuable. They have reinforced the real impact lipoedema has on women’s lives, from diagnosis delays and daily pain, to the emotional, financial and physical burden so many carry quietly.

Every response matters. The more women who share their story, the stronger the message becomes and the harder it is for lipoedema to be dismissed, misunderstood or ignored.

If you are living with lipoedema, we would be so grateful for your voice.

June is Lipoedema Awareness Month and one of the most common questions we hear is whether lipoedema and lymphoedema are the same thing. They are not, and the difference matters.

Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system is not moving fluid effectively, causing swelling in the affected area. Lipoedema is a chronic inflammatory fat disorder characterised by painful, disproportionate fat deposits, most often affecting both legs symmetrically, and sometimes the arms. Unlike lymphoedema, it is not primarily a fluid problem.

It is also possible to have both. In some people, secondary lymphoedema can develop as a result of lipoedema, which can make the overall picture more complex and symptoms harder to interpret without a proper assessment.

Getting the right diagnosis matters. Understanding what is actually driving your symptoms is the first step toward finding the right support.

If you are unsure what is contributing to your symptoms, we are here to help you find answers.

Which lipoedema character feels most like you right now?

There’s no right answer here — you might see yourself in more than one, and that’s the beauty of it.

Maybe you’re:
- Staying consistent with conservative management
- Learning everything you can about lipoedema
- Supporting other women in the community
- Or simply taking a mindful pause and giving yourself some care

Every journey is different, and every stage deserves compassion.

Tell us in the comments which character you relate to most.
Or send this to a friend, sister, or another woman in the community who might feel seen by this post.
Share it to your stories and tag us so we can see which one resonates with you most.
