Sometimes the person whoâs shows a child love and attention, makes time for them, and listens to them, is also the person causing them harm.
This is confusing - people who are meant to love and care for a child are not meant to hurt and abuse them.
As a child, you canât tell the difference between attention thatâs genuine love and something more sinister, because grooming isnât meant to be understood from the inside - thatâs the point of it.
All a child knows is someone is spending time with them - especially if others arenât - and it makes them feel important.
Those feelings a child has towards the adult are real - the caring for them is real.
What a child understands and feels is simple - someone is spending time with them, and they feel seen, loved, heard and safe.
None of this means a child invites the s*xual abuse in because they enjoyed the connection. They were responding to what was on offer and what they were experiencing in the moment.
Being groomed was never a childâs fault - ever.
