I was talking to a neighbor yesterday who couldn't understand why her lavender is just a giant mound of green leaves right now, with barely a purple flower in sight. She was doing everything 'right'—watering it regularly, giving it rich compost, and making sure it was fed. And that, I had to tell her gently, was exactly her problem. We love to fuss over our plants. We think everything needs to be pampered and fed like a prize tomato. But lavender isn't like the rest of the garden. It's a scrappy Mediterranean survivor. If you aren't getting piles of those fragrant purple spikes by June, you are almost certainly trying too hard. There are two very 'helpful' things we gardeners naturally do that will actively stop lavender from blooming. Once you stop doing them, the plant finally gets to do what it wants to do. I’ve jotted down what you need to stop doing today, plus the one specific time you actually *should* take your scissors to it if you want a massive second flush of flowers this summer.

Over my thirty years in the dirt, I've heard the same frustrated question every winter without fail: "Why won’t my Christmas cactus bloom?" People drive themselves crazy worrying about it. They try fancy fertilizers, they repot the poor thing, they move it to the brightest window in the house hoping to coax out a single flower. I usually have to break two bits of news to them. First, that treasured plant you’ve been lovingly calling a Christmas cactus all these years... almost certainly isn’t one. (Don't panic. The real identity is incredibly easy to spot once you know the secret). Second, the trick to getting those spectacular, sweeping winter blooms has nothing to do with expensive plant food. It actually requires you to treat the plant in a way that feels completely wrong to most modern gardeners. My mother used to shove hers in a drafty, dark pantry near the basement stairs for a month. I’ve written down exactly how to tell what kind of plant is actually sitting on your windowsill, and the very specific, slightly weird routine that forces them to explode with flowers. Get out of the plant's way, put down the expensive fertilizers, and just try this instead.
