Today we celebrate the ophthalmologists and eye care teams whose expertise helps protect and restore one of our most precious senses – sight.

While many people associate ophthalmologists with cataract surgery and vision correction, their impact extends far beyond the operating theatre. They play a vital role in preventing blindness through early screening and intervention, detecting serious health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension through routine eye examinations, caring for children with vision disorders, managing complex eye trauma, and driving research and innovation that continues to transform eye care.

Many ophthalmologists also dedicate their time to humanitarian outreach, helping restore sight in underserved communities, while mentoring and training the next generation of specialists who will shape the future of ophthalmology.

We recognise that our hospitals play a vital role as both essential healthcare providers and significant employers within our local communities. We welcome opportunities for Members of Parliament to visit our sites and gain first-hand insight into the high-quality care and range of services we provide.

We were pleased to welcome a special guest to Albany Day Hospital last month, Senator Dorinda Cox. Our team had the opportunity to provide a tour of the facility and share insights into the care we deliver to our local community. A special thank you to our MAC Chair, Dr Tom Bowles, who took time out of his schedule to join the visit and contribute to the discussion.
