One of the reasons Great Southern Specialist Centre was established was to improve access to specialist healthcare closer to home by attracting and supporting both resident and visiting specialists across a broad range of medical and surgical specialties.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be highlighting some of the visiting specialists who regularly visit Albany and provide services through GSSC. This week, we are highlighting Plastic Surgery.

🩺 𝗗𝗥 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞 𝗟𝗘𝗘
Dr Mark Lee regularly visits Albany to provide specialist plastic surgery services through GSSC.

Services include:
• Melanoma and skin cancers
• Hand surgery
• Aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, breast, and body

Dr Lee operates at the Albany Health Campus and privately in Perth.

🩺 𝗗𝗥 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞 𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗞𝗘𝗥𝗜
Dr Mark Hanikeri also consults regularly through GSSC, providing expertise in both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.*

Services include:
• Breast surgery (including augmentation, lift, reduction, reconstruction, and revision)
• Facial surgery (including eyelid surgery, brow lift, and prominent ear correction)
• Body contouring surgery (including abdominoplasty, liposuction, and body reduction)
• Surgical management of skin cancers, melanoma, and hand conditions (including Dupuytren's disease, carpal tunnel, and trigger finger)

Dr Hanikieri operates publically at the Albany Health Campus, privatley in Perth and also performs surgery locally at the Albany Day Hospital.

At Great Southern Specialist Centre, we believe strong communities support better health outcomes.

Since 2019, we have proudly supported the Albany Surf Life Saving Club's volunteer patrol service as a major sponsor.

Earlier this season, some of the GSSC team spent a morning with the Club's patrol volunteers to better understand the people, commitment and community impact behind this important service.

What stood out was the incredible contribution made by volunteers. Hundreds of hours are contributed by volunteers across all areas of the Club each year, supporting lifesaving services, youth development, education, events and the many activities that help strengthen our community.

This video provides a glimpse into the people behind the red and yellow uniforms and why supporting organisations like the Albany Surf Life Saving Club matters.

Strengthening resident surgical services in the Great Southern

Great Southern Specialist Centre is pleased to welcome Dr Davina Von Hagt to GSSC from 2 June, joining resident general surgeons Dr Tom Bowles and Dr Edward Yeboah in providing surgical services to Albany and the Great Southern region.

Pictured together recently at the RACS 94th Annual Scientific Congress, the team reflects the continued growth of resident general surgeons providing services through GSSC. Alongside their clinical work locally, opportunities such as the annual Congress allow surgeons to stay connected with current research, emerging surgical techniques and broader professional networks, helping support the ongoing delivery of contemporary surgical services in regional areas.

Dr Von Hagt completed her specialist general surgical training in Western Australia before undertaking dedicated breast surgery fellowship training at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Royal Women’s Hospital. She will provide both breast and general surgical services to patients across the Great Southern region.

Her decision to make Albany home reflects a strong commitment to regional surgical care and the continued growth of specialist surgical services available locally. Alongside consulting and operating in Albany, Dr Von Hagt will also be visiting Katanning to consult and operate, further supporting access to surgical services across the broader region.

Together with other surgical services across Albany, resident general surgeons providing services through GSSC help support ongoing access to both public and private surgical care for patients across Albany and the surrounding region.

Specialist psychiatry services available through GSSC

Great Southern Specialist Centre supports access to specialist psychiatry services for the Great Southern community through Dr Nicholas Faint and Associate Professor Mat Coleman.

Dr Nicholas Faint is a resident psychiatrist based in Albany, providing specialist assessment and management for adults, including ADHD assessment and treatment, as well as a range of other mental health conditions.

Associate Professor Mat Coleman consults regularly through GSSC and provides specialist psychiatric services for children and adolescents, including ADHD, as well as general psychiatric conditions in adults. His areas of interest also include Addiction Psychiatry, including eating disorders, alcohol and substance dependence, and sexual health related conditions.

Associate Professor Mat Coleman also offers telehealth appointments where appropriate, supported through GSSC’s purpose-built telehealth facilities.

Both specialists provide referral-based psychiatric services involving structured assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and ongoing management where appropriate.

While some ADHD assessment and prescribing pathways may now occur in primary care, specialist psychiatry services continue to play an important role where more detailed assessment, medication initiation and adjustment, broader mental health management or ongoing specialist involvement may be required.

Where appropriate and once medications are stabilised, co-prescribing arrangements with a patient’s regular GP are also be available, minimising costs for patients.

Referrals are reviewed by the individual specialist and acceptance is based on clinical suitability and service capacity. These services do not provide emergency psychiatric care or support for high-risk acute presentations.

As a private specialist service, consultation fees do apply. Medicare rebates may be available with a valid referral from your GP or medical practitioner.

You do not need private health insurance to be seen by a specialist consulting through the Great Southern Specialist Centre.

After your consultation, your specialist will discuss the most appropriate pathway for any procedure or surgery based on your condition, clinical needs and hospital criteria.

Depending on the procedure and eligibility requirements, patients may:
• be added to a public hospital waiting list through the WA Health system
• choose to use private health insurance for treatment at a private hospital
• or in some cases access a self-funded care option

Self-funded care means paying directly for your procedure yourself, rather than through private health insurance, and may be an option for some procedures at Albany Day Hospital.

Specialist appointments via telehealth, right here in Albany

Specialists consulting through Great Southern Specialist Centre may offer appointments via telehealth (video conference), depending on the service and clinical requirements.

GSSC provides a purpose-built telehealth room, allowing patients to attend their appointment locally while consulting with their specialist remotely.

This supports access to care without the need to travel, particularly for follow-up appointments or services where telehealth is appropriate.

Telehealth services are currently supported by specialists including:

Associate Professor Mat Coleman – Psychiatry
Providing specialist psychiatric assessment and management for children and adolescents (including ADHD), as well as general psychiatric conditions in adults, with a focus on structured treatment planning and ongoing care where appropriate.

Providing specialist care in areas such as diabetes, thyroid disorders and other hormonal conditions, supporting ongoing management of chronic disease.
