For many children with feeding difficulties, being listened to builds trust, reduces fear, and opens the door to curiosity.

One simple tool I often use is a food preferences list:
• foods that look interesting
• foods that feel like a “maybe”
• foods that are a definite no
No pressure to eat - just exploring.

If your child’s eating feels stuck or causes distress (for you or them), the Dietitians at Liberation Clinic have extra post-grad training in feeding challenges, and can help you move forward - gently and safely.

🍽️ Less pressure can actually help kids eat more.
When a child isn’t eating, it’s natural to encourage “just one bite.”
But pressure often increases anxiety, and anxiety reduces appetite.
One helpful approach is a therapeutic response called the division of responsibility:
• Parents decide what, when, and where food is offered
• Children decide if they eat and how much
This reduces battles at the dinner table, and helps the nervous system of the child feel safer around food and in this environment.
💛 Lowering pressure is not giving up — it’s creating calmer mealtimes for everyone.
The Dietitians at Liberation Clinic have extra training in feeding challenges, and can help you use this approach safely while monitoring growth and nutrition.

Is your child sensitive to textures?
Many children with feeding difficulties prefer:
• crunchy, dry foods
• foods that look and feel the same
And feel distressed by:
• mushy or mixed textures
• wet or unpredictable foods

This isn’t random, it’s the nervous system of the child reacting to unpredictability. However, it can make it tricky to fit highly unpredictable foods like fruit and vegetables in around sensory needs! One banana is not the same texture, colour, taste as the next banana!

Understanding your child’s food & sensory preferences is a powerful first step towards meeting the needs of kids & teens with fussy eating or ARFID (or adults- you're never too old to get support!). The Dietitians at Liberation Clinic have extra training in feeding difficulties so that we can guide this process gently and safely, without forcing or adding to stress.
