Can Medicare cover breast reduction? Here’s what patients often misunderstand.

The answer is: sometimes, but only when strict medical criteria are met.

Medicare does not cover breast reduction simply for cosmetic preference. In some cases, a Medicare item number may apply when breast size is linked with clinical symptoms, such as neck or shoulder pain, and the procedure meets the relevant MBS criteria.
