3 things our Podiatrist Neda avoids doing to her feet ❌🦶

1. Avoid shellac on your toenails if you can 💅
2. Avoid buying a brand new pair of shoes that you’re not familiar with right before travelling✈️
3. Never go 0-100 when starting a new exercise - always ease into new movements 🏋️‍♀️

Are you guilty of doing these things? What’s something you would never do to your feet? 💬

Your big toe joint is one of the most important joints for efficient movement. 🦶

It helps you balance, walk, run and push off with every step. When it becomes stiff or painful, your body starts compensating elsewhere, which can contribute to calf tightness, achilles strain, knee pain and even hip or lower back discomfort.

Big toe stiffness is not something to ignore, especially if you notice pain during walking, running, squatting or exercise. 🏃🏻‍♀️

We’ve put together slides without going into very specific cases or biomechanics to keep things easy to follow but please note that this is not medical advice and we always recommend seeking individual medical advice from your local podiatrist! ✅

Number 5 is what nightmares are made of! Always wear enclosed shoes when doing any outdoor work 🥾

So many major running events are coming up in the next few months and we are seeing an influx of runners at various stages of their running journey! Our podiatrist Neda goes through her current weekly half marathon split which mainly consists of:

2 Full body strength sessions with higher load and lower repetitions. These always include 4 movement patterns: Squats, Hip-hinge, Single leg, plyometrics/ or ballistics

3 runs: Tempo/speed, recovery/easy and long

The split may also include pilates, long walks, & other strength sessions but they can vary week to week & every 5 -6 weeks there is a de-load.

Please keep in mind that this is Neda’s routine (general advice only) & although it’s a guide that can be followed we always recommend consulting with your health professional first before starting new exercise programmes especially as she hasn’t dived into nutrition & recovery (VERY important aspects of running).

If you have pain or a history of lower limb injuries we DEFINITELY recommend booking in with your podiatrist for a musculoskeletal assessment. There are also a tonne of online resources to help with your running journey if you want a general guide to follow.

Nobody was technically taught how to walk, we just end up figuring it out on our own and don’t change much unless a problem develops

As podiatrists we watch a lot of people walk as part of their gait analysis and there are a few helpful cues we often give to improve their walking.

Our podiatrist Caitlin explains what these cues are and demonstrates them super clearly.

Save this video and apply it as much as possible! 🚶‍♀️🦶

How to build a smart running shoe rotation ✅👟

Our podiatrist lists the 2- 3 different types of shoes to ideally have in your rotation depending on your running frequency/ goals.

Not everyone has to have a variety of running shoes but if it’s an activity you are hoping to increase in frequency, distance, or intensity, or you have an upcoming race a shoe rotation can have a positive impact on your performance and injury risk reduction.

Pause or screenshot to read all the different types of shoes she recommends based on the type of run you’re doing!

Please note that not every single shoe style can be named and we have listed the most common recommendations.

If you would like tailored footwear advice please book in to see your local podiatrist for a musculoskeletal assessment.

Every shoe can feel different on someone’s feet given their generic nature. As podiatrists we can observe & assess how someone is moving in their footwear and tweak little things to have a major impact on how the shoes feel!

Whether it’s work, walking, running, HYROX or any other sport - there are ways to improve how your footwear feels during activities.

In some cases it’s laces, padding strategies, over the counter or custom foot orthoses or even sock types and materials.

If you have any footwear concerns, book in to see your local podiatrist!
