A very important reminder to switch off any hidden devices in advance of the national test on Monday
3-minute Read. CW: mention of violence.
Are you ready for the AusAlert national test next week?
What is happening?
Next Monday (July 27 at 2pm local Victorian time) there will be a national test to make sure AusAlert is working.
This means most mobile phones, tablets and smart watches will receive an AusAlert test alert.
It is just a test; it does not mean there is an emergency.
What is AusAlert?
AusAlert is the new national warning system from the Australian Government. It will be ready to use in October. AusAlert uses technology to send emergency messages to most mobile devices to let everyone know important information during disasters like bushfires, severe weather and public health emergencies.
What will the test involve?
If your smart devices are turned on, the AusAlert test will:
• make them vibrate
• play a loud siren-like sound for 10 seconds
• turn the screen on automatically
This may happen even if the volume is turned down or your devices are on silent or do not disturb.
Do I need to plan ahead?
People in domestic or family violence situations, who may have a concealed safety phone as part of their safety planning, may want to take extra steps to keep safe.
Gender-based violence experts at Safe + Equal say people can plan ahead by:
• giving the phone to a trusted friend or leaving it somewhere safe before 27 July.
• switching the phone to aeroplane mode or turning it off at least one hour before the testing and leaving it off for 24 hours.
If you’re worried about your immediate safety, call 000. If you need support, visit areyousafeathome.org.au to find a list of support services near you.
The interruption and siren-like sound may also be triggering or a source of sensory-overwhelm for many in our community. It is fine if you need to switch off your phone or give it to a trusted friend.
Talk to your friends and family members, to let them know the test is happening, and if you need their support.
Where can I find more disability specific support?
For more specific support for people with disabilities, the Australian Government have developed resources in many accessible formats. They can be found here: https://www.ausalert.gov.au/community-resources/disabilities-extra-support.
