Berry and Collective Psychology is a youth focused psychology practice on Sydney's Northern Beaches. We work with children, adolescents, young adults and their families to improve wellbeing and treat mental health conditions. We are a multidisciplinary group of passionate mental health professionals who aim to bring warmth, acceptance, and hope to our interactions with all clients. Our team of cli

nicians has combined experience of over 100 years, and expertise in evidence based practice including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Schema Therapy. We work with a range of personal and mental health issues including anxiety, depression, peer relationships, bullying, family separation and change, self-esteem, and relationship difficulties. Treatment is planned around individual needs and goals, and we aim to empower our clients and enhance the strengths of the individual and their family. We welcome referrals from GPs under Mental Health Care Plans. This allows you to claim a rebate through Medicare which covers a large portion of the appointment cost. See your GP for a referral, or give us a all if you would like more information. We also accept the following referral types: Psychological Access Plus, NDIS, Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA), Victims Services, WorkCover NSW, and NSW Motor Accidents Scheme.

Have you ever gone to the shops without your grocery list and forgotten the items earlier in the list?

That is the recency effect, a cognitive bias where people tend to recall the most recent experience, item or event. In short, it means that our short-term memory has not had time to push out recent information!

Myth: “Only mental health professionals have a role to play in support.”

Fact: This is not correct; support is available in many other areas. While professionals can certainly play an important role, this myth assumes that mental health conditions are so complex and challenging that only professionals can support those struggling.

Support, at an individual and local level, can look like:
- Staying connected with friends or relatives
- Having a balanced routine
- Practicing mindfulness
- Moving your body - going for a walk or a swim
- Setting healthy boundaries in relationships
- Getting enough sleep
- Eating food that nourishes and nurtures
- Allowing space to feel and reflect

If you or someone you know is struggling, a visit to your GP is often a great place to start if you are considering professional support.

Doubt stops you before you even begin. Give it a go, and if you fail, you have an opportunity to learn from it and try again. If you try, you’re always one step closer to success!

Venting and expressing feelings that are causing you worry is a great form of temporary relief. Deep-rooted catharsis sometimes requires professional support. Speaking to a professional can assist you in actionable healing rather than re-traumatization.

Change is inevitable; going with the flow is sometimes the only way to move through it.

Myth: “All mental health conditions are the same.”

Fact: Every mental health condition has unique origins, symptoms and treatments. It is certainly not a ‘one size fits all’ scenario. Grouping mental health conditions together oversimplifies experiences and invalidates individual suffering.

This myth can be particularly damaging if it undermines help-seeking. The appropriate support can be vital for effective care and recovery.

If you or someone you know is struggling, a visit to your GP is often a great place to start if you are considering professional support.

Have you ever driven to work and been late because it took you longer than you expected?

That is the well-travelled road effect, a cognitive bias that tricks us into thinking that the time to get to places will be shorter or longer than it really is. Time is usually underestimated when travelling a familiar route, whereas time is overestimated when travelling to an unfamiliar place!
