When a child avoids homework, it’s easy to assume they don’t want to do it 😖
But what if they’re not avoiding the work...
What if they’re avoiding the feeling that comes with it?
For many children with dyslexia and other learning differences, homework isn’t just challenging, it’s emotionally exhausting.
After repeatedly struggling, making mistakes or feeling like they’re falling behind, some children begin to protect themselves from experiencing that failure again.
Avoidance isn’t always laziness.
Sometimes it’s anxiety.
Sometimes it’s frustration.
Sometimes it’s a child who no longer believes they can succeed.
When we understand what’s driving the behaviour, we can respond with support instead of assumptions.
Every child deserves to feel capable, understood and safe enough to learn.
