Why can stress feel so different during perimenopause?

Your hormones don’t work independently. They communicate with and influence multiple systems throughout your body, including your nervous system, thyroid, digestive system, bones, muscles, and cardiovascular system.

And then there’s cortisol, your major stress hormone, produced by the adrenal glands.

Cortisol isn’t “bad.”

The concern is ongoing, chronic stress, especially when your body becomes less able to tolerate stress the way it once did.

During perimenopause, understanding the connection between your hormones and stress response can be an important piece of the puzzle. ✨

Barberry (Berberis vulgaris) has been valued for more than 2,500 years in Western, Ayurvedic, and Chinese herbal medicine. Traditionally, it has been used as a bitter tonic to support digestion, liver function, gallbladder health, and the urinary tract.

One of the reasons Barberry is especially interesting in herbal medicine is its combination of bitter tonic, cholagogue, and antimicrobial actions. Traditionally, these properties have made it a valuable herb for supporting healthy digestive secretions and bile flow.

Barberry contains berberine, along with other naturally occurring alkaloids and phytochemicals. While berberine has received significant attention for its antimicrobial properties, it is important to remember that whole Barberry is more than just berberine. The herb contains a complex combination of constituents that work together as part of its natural phytochemical profile.

🌿 A traditional botanical valued for its bitter, liver-supporting, and antimicrobial properties.

Looking for natural ways to support prostate and men’s health? 🌿

In Western herbal medicine, herbs such as wild yam, saw palmetto and ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) are commonly used in approaches to men’s health.

Wild yam — traditionally used in herbal medicine in relation to hormonal balance
Saw palmetto — commonly used for prostate and urinary health
Ashwagandha — traditionally used to support stress resilience, sleep, energy and libido

Every person is different, so herbal support should be tailored to your individual needs.

Could these herbs be part of your natural approach to men's health?

PERIMENOPAUSE TESTING: PART 1

What if you could get a clearer picture of what’s happening inside your body during perimenopause?

In Part 1, we’re looking at two tests used at the beginning of the program:

Urinalysis — gives foundational information about things like hydration, blood sugar, kidney function, pH and more.

Saliva hormone testing — looks at hormone patterns throughout the day, including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol and DHEA.

Understanding your individual hormone patterns can help guide a more personalised approach to managing perimenopause symptoms.

This is Part 1 of our Perimenopause Tests series. Stay tuned for the next tests!

What does John D. Rockefeller have to do with modern medicine? 👀

Rockefeller built enormous wealth through the oil industry, and his fortune later became connected to major developments in education and medicine.

But the story of how modern pharmaceutical medicine grew, and what happened to traditional approaches like herbal medicine...is a fascinating and controversial one.

In Part 1, we explore the Rockefeller story and the shift from traditional healing toward modern pharmaceutical medicine.

👉 Watch to the end and follow for Part 2.

Did you know the foods that give us that beautiful red colour can also provide lycopene? 🍅

Lycopene is a naturally occurring plant compound found in foods such as:

🍅 Tomatoes
🍉 Watermelon
🍊 Pink grapefruit

And here's a simple tip: if you're eating tomatoes, cooking them and pairing them with olive oil may help your body absorb more of the lycopene.

So rather than always reaching for a supplement, start by getting more lycopene through whole foods. 🌿

Which lycopene-rich food is your favourite?

Estrogen doesn’t simply “crash” during perimenopause.

One of the biggest misconceptions about perimenopause is that estrogen just steadily declines.

In reality, estrogen can fluctuate up and down, sometimes reaching very high levels and other times dropping much lower while progesterone may already be declining as ovulation becomes less consistent.

This changing balance between estrogen and progesterone can coincide with symptoms such as breast tenderness, bloating, heavy periods, mood changes, and fluid retention. 🌿

Understanding the fluctuations, not just the levels, is an important part of understanding perimenopause.

Did you know pumpkin seeds can be a great addition to a man's diet? 🎃

Pumpkin seeds contain zinc, phytosterols, and essential fatty acids, nutrients that make them an interesting food for men's health.

Zinc is particularly relevant to the prostate, which naturally contains high levels of this mineral.

A simple food you can add to your day, but as always, nutritional needs can vary from person to person.

Snack on them, add them to meals, or sprinkle them over your favourite foods.

One of the earliest hormonal changes in perimenopause? Progesterone. 🌿

As ovulation becomes less regular, progesterone production can become lower and more inconsistent, even while you’re still having periods.

And progesterone does much more than support reproduction. It also interacts with systems involved in sleep, mood, and the nervous system.

This is why changes in progesterone may be linked with things like disrupted sleep, anxiety, and changes in your menstrual cycle during perimenopause. ✨

Looking into natural ways to support prostate health? 🌿

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is one of the best-known herbs used in Western herbal medicine for men's prostate and urinary health.

It's commonly discussed in relation to urinary symptoms and hormonal pathways involved in prostate tissue.

In this video, we take a closer look at saw palmetto and its role in men's health.

Always consider your individual health needs when choosing herbs and supplements.
