🐾 Are we expecting too much from our dogs?
🤔Take a moment and think about everything we ask of them.
👉We expect them to be calm in busy cafés.
👉Friendly towards every stranger.
👉Ignore every dog they see.
👉Walk nicely through noisy streets.
👉Cope with fireworks, thunderstorms, traffic, children, cyclists, runners and unfamiliar places.
👉Stay home alone without becoming distressed.
👉Travel in cars without an issue.
👉Visit the vet without fear and be happy to be probed and examined.
👉Never bark at the door. Except to bark when there is real danger.
👉Never jump up. But jump up when we think it’s ok.
👉Never pull on the lead (but also need been shown a good alternative).
👉Never react.
👉Always listen.
👉Almost “read our mind”.
It’s a pretty long list.
Now imagine someone expected that of you.
To stay calm every second of every day, regardless of what was happening around you. To never become overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious or scared. To always make the “right” decision, no matter how stressful the situation.
‼️Everyone would struggle. Expectation so high that you will fail are unfair, unrealistic and unmanageable .
🐕🦺Yet we often expect exactly that from our dogs.
The world has become busier, louder and more demanding than ever before. Our dogs are trying to navigate an environment they didn’t evolve for, while living by rules they don’t naturally understand.
〰️They’re trying to do their best to survive in this environment, whilst being manoeuvred through life by 2 legged creatures who don’t speak the same lingo.
(Can you imagine trying to do something guided by another person, who speaks a completely unfamiliar language ???)
🤔So perhaps the most important thing we can teach isn’t perfect obedience.
🟢Perhaps it’s helping our dogs cope.
🟢Helping them feel safe.
🟢Helping them build confidence.
🟢Helping them recover from life’s challenges.
🟢Helping them understand that the world isn’t something to fear.
➡️Obedience has its place. A reliable recall, loose-lead walking and good manners are valuable life skills.
⚠️But they should never come at the expense of a dog’s emotional wellbeing.
🙏Let’s cut our dogs a little slack.
They aren’t trying to make our lives difficult.
They’re simply doing their best to cope with a world that asks an awful lot of them.
❤️ Sometimes, the kindest thing we can do isn’t ask for more … it’s expect a little less and support a little more.
