It's easy to assume that a darker or more colourful essential oil must be stronger or better.

But colour isn't a reliable way to judge quality.

Many pure essential oils are colourless or pale yellow, while others have distinctive natural colours.

A better approach is to look at the botanical identity, sourcing, appropriate testing and production information.

Next time you're comparing essential oils, look beyond what you can see in the bottle.

Essential oils come from plants, but they're much more concentrated than the botanical material they originate from.

That's why it's important to understand safe use, including appropriate dilution and individual oil precautions.

Extra care is needed around children, pets and people who are pregnant or have certain health conditions.

Using essential oils thoughtfully is just as important as choosing quality oils.

October's Oil of the Month is Lemongrass. 🌿

Bright and lemony, but distinctly green and herbaceous, Lemongrass brings something a little different to the fresh scents we naturally reach for in spring.

And despite what its name might suggest, Lemongrass isn't simply another type of lemon.

That fresh citrus-meets-grass aroma is what gives this oil its own character.

Have you compared Lemon and Lemongrass side by side?

If lemon feels sharp and orange feels sweet, Bergamot sits somewhere a little different.

Its aroma is still unmistakably citrus, but there’s a softer floral quality that gives it more depth.

That makes Bergamot a lovely oil to explore if you enjoy fresh scents but want something a little less obvious.

One important note: expressed Bergamot can be phototoxic, so topical use requires appropriate dilution and sun-safety precautions.

Are you already a Bergamot person, or have you never tried it?

It can be tempting to judge an essential oil by how strong it smells straight from the bottle.

But different botanicals naturally have very different aromatic strengths, so a softer scent doesn’t necessarily mean lower quality.

Look at the bigger picture: botanical name, sourcing, extraction method and storage.

Save this for the next time you’re comparing oils.

There’s a reason a blend can smell different five minutes after you first make it.

Different aromatic compounds evaporate at different rates, which is why some scents make an immediate impression while others become more noticeable later.

Learning about top, middle and base notes is a useful starting point if you enjoy creating your own diffuser blends.

Next time you blend, notice which aroma you smell first — and which one is still there later.

It can be tempting to start combining oils straight away, but spending a moment with each scent individually can make blending much easier.

Try smelling each oil separately first and notice which parts of the aroma stand out to you.

Then, when you start pairing them, you’ll have a better idea of which scent you want to lead and which ones you want to sit quietly in the background.

A simple habit, especially if you’re still learning what you like.

Save this for your next blending session.

Spring can smell completely different from one home to the next.

Bright citrus, soft florals, crisp greens or something warmer and woodier — start with the scent profile you naturally enjoy, then explore from there.

Save this as a little spring scent guide 🌿
