Arthritis & Osteoporosis Tasmania is delighted to announce that Her Excellency the Honourable Caroline Wells, Governor of Tasmania, has accepted the role of Patron of Arthritis & Osteoporosis Tasmania. The Office of the Governor has a long and valued history of supporting Arthritis & Osteoporosis Tasmania, and we are deeply grateful for the ongoing patronage.

An experienced Tasmanian community leader, before taking Office Her Excellency held senior leadership positions in the health sector, including former CEO of Diabetes Tasmania from 2005, member of the Tasmanian Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance, the Premier's Health and Wellbeing Advisory Council, and Chair of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Tasmania. She is widely respected both in the not-for-profit and public sectors.

Arthritis & Osteoporosis Tasmania looks forward to having the support of Her Excellency as official Patron as we mark milestone events, and continue our role of providing information, awareness and support programs for Tasmanians living with, or at risk of developing arthritis, osteoporosis and related musculoskeletal conditions.

Choosing between a specialist appointment and the electricity bill isn't hypothetical for a lot of people living with arthritis. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.

Monash University, in collaboration with Arthritis Australia, is inviting people living with arthritis to take part in a survey exploring how arthritis impacts everyday work - from paid jobs to unpaid roles like caring, household tasks, and volunteering. It's a chance to share those real trade-offs, gently and anonymously.

💙10-15 minutes. 18+ Australian resident. Living with arthritis.

🦴Tasmania has some of the longest joint replacement wait times in the country, and one of the highest rates of opioid prescribing for pain. But surgery and painkillers aren’t the only path forward for people with osteoarthritis.

Join us at the Menzies Research Roadshow and hear from Associate Professor Dawn Aitken about her work to improve osteoarthritis care across Tasmania.

Dawn founded the IMPACT-TAS project to increase access to physiotherapy and digital healthcare for Tasmanians living with osteoarthritis.

In her talk, Dawn will explore:
✅ Why exercise is one of the most underused first-line treatments for osteoarthritis
✅ How physiotherapy programs could ease pressure on our overstretched health system
✅ Practical ways to stay active and pain-free for longer

Dawn is one of three speakers featured at this event, all sharing research to improve the health of Tasmanians.

Ticket are free but limited – register using the link in the comments 👇

Congratulations Menzies Institute for Medical Research - Arthritis & Osteoporosis Tasmania is looking forward to working with Assoc Prof Dawn Aitken and other partners on this exciting project.

A $5 million funding boost will see Tasmanians living with pain caused by knee and hip osteoarthritis have better access to high-quality care as an evidence-based program is set to be rolled out to more than 20 new locations.

Led by Associate Professor Dawn Aitken, the new project will expand the successful GLA:D® program, and introduce innovative virtual care options to better support regional and remote communities.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is a major cause of pain, disability and joint replacement surgery. This exciting initiative aims to improve quality of life for Tasmanians, reduce pain and disability, and help ease pressure on the health system.

Over the past 50 years, for all sorts of personal reasons, kind supporters like you have been supporting the work of Arthritis & Osteoporosis Tasmania. Your generosity has enabled us to provide a wide range of free community information and resources, and to continue our advocacy efforts urging health planners and policy makers to take arthritis seriously.

When we first started in 1976 (initially as RAFT) we never imagined we would still be hearing 'it's only arthritis' five decades later. Our job is not yet done. We must continue to be a strong voice for the 1 in 4 Tasmanians living with the pain and debilitating impact of arthritis, osteoporosis and related conditions.

There's still time to make a difference before the financial year ends. Every donation made by 30 June helps us keep getting trusted information and support into the hands of people who need it most. Your gift stays in Tasmania and will make a big difference to the level of support our small, largely voluntary association can provide. As a registered charity donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
