Physiotherapists are uniquely qualified to provide targeted gross motor skill exercises because of our extensive training in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and movement science. We have a detailed understanding of how muscles, tendons, joints, and nerves work together to produce efficient movement.
When designing therapy programs, physiotherapists carefully analyse a child's movement patterns, strengths, limitations, and underlying physical challenges. We understand the optimal position, angle of pull, and activation patterns required to strengthen specific muscle groups and improve functional movement. Every activity and exercise is selected with a purpose and is based on the child's individual needs and goals.
For children with disabilities, developmental delays, injuries, or complex physical needs, physiotherapists use their knowledge of physiology and pathology to target the underlying factors affecting movement. Rather than simply practising a skill, we identify the physical deficits contributing to the difficulty and prescribe exercises that promote strength, balance, coordination, endurance, and motor control.
There is always a reason behind the activities we provide. Whether a child is working on walking more efficiently, improving their sitting balance, standing independently, climbing stairs, running, or participating in sport, each exercise is chosen to support the specific muscles and movement patterns required to achieve that goal.
This evidence-based approach is why physiotherapy can achieve such positive outcomes. By addressing the underlying physical impairments and building functional movement skills, we help children become more independent, move more efficiently, conserve energy, and participate more fully in everyday activities that are important to them and their families.
