School holidays are the perfect time to build speech and language skills!

Learning doesn't have to stop during the holidays. In fact, some of the best opportunities happen through everyday moments.

Try incorporating speech practice into activities like:
📚 Reading books together
🌳 Going on nature walks
🍪 Baking and following recipes
🎲 Playing board games
đź›’ Shopping together
🎨 Arts and crafts

Just 5–10 minutes of fun practice each day can make a meaningful difference.

Most importantly, keep it playful! The best learning happens when children are engaged, relaxed, and having fun.

Wishing all everyone a wonderful, safe, and happy school holiday break!

🌿 Now Offering ADOS-2 Assessments 🌿

At Little Oak Speech, we now offer ADOS-2 assessments for children and adolescents.

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a standardised assessment that evaluates:

✨ Communication
✨ Social interaction
✨ Play skills
✨ Restricted and repetitive behaviours

The ADOS-2 uses a range of structured and play-based activities to observe behaviours associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Information gathered during the assessment can help inform recommendations, support planning, and contribute to a broader assessment process.

Assessment findings can be shared with your child's Paediatrician, psychologist, or multidisciplinary team to support clinical decision-making.

Please note that Little Oak Speech does not provide formal medical diagnoses.

Finding time for speech practice can feel like just another thing on the never-ending to-do list. The good news? You don’t need to set aside extra time or add more to your day.

Speech practice can happen during the everyday tasks you're already doing.

By weaving your child’s target sounds into daily routines, you can create lots of meaningful practice opportunities without adding extra pressure on yourself or your child.

When children are learning to communicate, they often need extra time to think, process, and respond.

Before asking another question, helping, or talking again, try pausing and waiting for up to 10 seconds.

You might notice that your child:
🌿 Looks at you.
🌿 Points or gestures.
🌿 Makes a sound or says a word.
🌿 Attempts to communicate in their own way.

Those quiet pauses can make a BIG difference in helping children feel confident and heard!

Building Language Through Play and Connection

When children are learning to communicate, being asked lots of questions can sometimes feel like pressure or a 'test'. Instead, try making comments about what your child is doing, seeing, or feeling.

While questions can be helpful sometimes, asking too many can accidentally make communication feel like a test, especially for children who are still learning to talk or who find communication tricky.

One simple strategy is to try making comments instead of questions during play and everyday routines.

Comments help reduce pressure and give your child clear language models they can listen to, learn from, and eventually copy in their own time.

Comments help conversations feel more natural and enjoyable, and often encourage children to communicate more on their own.

Remember, you don’t need to quiz your child to help their language grow. Simply talking with them during everyday moments is powerful.

Looking for a simple way to support your child’s communication skills at home?

This week's Book of the Week is 'Mr Luke’s Magic Library Dinosaur Trail by Mr Luke'. It's a fun and engaging story that does more than just entertain!

It’s a great way to build:
âś” Language and storytelling skills.
âś” Understanding of emotions.
âś” Social communication (like turn-taking and problem-solving).
âś” Early literacy skills like rhyming and sound awareness.

The best part? You don’t need anything fancy, just a book and a few simple questions can make a big difference.

Did you know that play is one of the most powerful ways to support feeding development?

Messy, fun experiences like finger painting with yoghurt aren’t just cute, they help children feel safe exploring new textures, smells, and eventually tastes.

At Little Oak Speech, we take a gentle, play-based approach to feeding and are trained in the SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach, supporting children to build confidence around food at their own pace.

If your child is a picky eater or mealtimes feel stressful, you’re not alone and support can make a big difference.
