Meet Our Funeral Director
Darryl Smith

My name is Darryl Smith, Founder and Funeral Director of Gii Dhuwi Funerals.

From an early age, I knew I wanted to work in the funeral industry. Caring for people during their most difficult moments has always been my passion.

My career began at Logan Funerals in Moree, before continuing with Joseph Medcalf Funerals in Sydney, where I gained invaluable experience supporting families from all walks of life.

Throughout my journey, I saw the challenges many families face after the loss of someone they love.
Those experiences inspired me to establish Gii Dhuwi Funerals—a funeral home built on compassion, respect and genuine care.

For me, this isn't simply a profession—it's a privilege.
Every family deserves to feel supported during their time of loss. I am committed to going above and beyond to ensure every farewell is meaningful, personal and honours the life of your loved one.

When you choose Gii Dhuwi Funerals, you're choosing someone who will treat your family as if it were my own.

Our Promise to You

At Gii Dhuwi Funerals, we believe every life deserves to be honoured with dignity.
We understand that every family's circumstances are different, and we know arranging a funeral can feel
overwhelming—both emotionally and financially.

If cost is a concern, please don't hesitate to speak with us. We will always do our best to find a solution that works for your family.
We proudly offer flexible payment plans, because we believe financial hardship should never stand in the way of giving your loved one the farewell they deserve.

Our commitment is to provide:

• Compassionate, professional care
• Personalised funeral services
• Respect for all cultures, faiths and traditions
• Transparent and affordable pricing

Celebrating NAIDOC Week | Honouring Our Elders❤️🖤💛

This NAIDOC Week, we proudly honour Dorothy Wotherspoon (née Munro), a proud Gomeroi/Gamilaraay woman from Moree, NSW, who has called Newcastle Awabakal Country home for more than 70 years.

At 93 years of age, Dorothy continues to inspire generations through her strength, resilience and leadership. Alongside her late husband, Teddy Wotherspoon, Dorothy made history in 1971 as Australia's first Aboriginal woman to own and operate a public hotel, taking over the Catherine Hill Bay Hotel. She opened its doors to everyone, believing that every person deserved to be welcomed with dignity and respect.

Dorothy's commitment to inclusion was shaped by her own experiences growing up and witnessing the discrimination her hardworking father faced. Rather than accepting those barriers, she broke them, creating a place where everyone belonged.

From welcoming locals to sharing stories of a young Mel Gibson visiting the hotel while filming Summer City in 1977, Dorothy's life is woven into the history of both Awabakal Country and our nation.

When asked what message she wanted to leave for future generations, Dorothy shared these powerful words:

"The most important thing to know and do is get an education. Learn, study and continue to grow and be powerful in this world."

We are the oldest living culture in the world. We are still here, we are strong, and we're not going anywhere. We will continue to stand proud, honour our Elders, share our stories, and keep our culture alive for generations to come.

As we celebrate NAIDOC Week, we thank Dorothy for her courage, her wisdom and the path she helped pave for those who have followed. May we continue to honour our Elders by listening, learning and carrying their stories forward.

Happy NAIDOC Week❤️🖤💛

Today, with heavy hearts and deep love, we returned Wesley to Country—back to his beautiful land, where he now rests with his ancestors and loved ones who have gone before him.

It was a day of sorrow, but also one of strength, connection, and honour. Being able to lay Wesley to rest on his Country brings comfort to us all, knowing he is at peace, surrounded by spirit, culture, and peace.

We are grateful for the love, support, and kindness shown to our family during this time. Your words and presence have meant more than we can express.

Rest peacefully, Wesley. You will always be remembered, always be loved, and always be part of us🌿❤️💛🖤
