🏉 Hand Therapy Week: Thumb Ligament Injuries in football 👍

A strong mark, a heavy tackle, or a fall onto an outstretched hand can sometimes lead to a ligament injury in the thumb.

Often called Skier’s Thumb or Gamekeeper’s Thumb, this injury involves damage to the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), a key ligament that stabilises the thumb during gripping and pinching activities.

🔍 Common symptoms include:
• Pain and swelling at the base of the thumb
• Bruising around the thumb joint
• Difficulty gripping the football, opening jars, or holding objects
• A feeling of thumb weakness or instability

🏉 How does it happen in footy?
Thumb ligament injuries commonly occur during:
• Heavy tackles
• Contested marks
• Falls onto an outstretched hand
• Awkward contact with another player or the ball

👋 How can a Hand Therapist help?
Hand therapists play an important role in recovery by:
✔️ Assessing the severity of the injury
✔️ Fabricating custom thumb splints
✔️ Guiding safe return to sport and daily activities
✔️ Providing targeted exercises to restore strength, stability, and function

Early assessment and treatment can help prevent ongoing instability and improve long-term outcomes.

🏃‍♂️🤾‍♀️⛹️‍♀️ Hand Therapy Week Spotlight: Scaphoid Fractures

Did you know that the scaphoid is the most commonly fractured carpal bone, accounting for 60% of all carpal fractures?

Scaphoid fractures typically occur in active young people aged 15–25 years, often following a fall onto an outstretched hand during sport or recreational activities. The impact forces the wrist into hyperextension, placing significant stress on the scaphoid bone.

⚠️ Symptoms may include:
• Pain on the thumb side of the wrist
• Swelling around the wrist
• Reduced grip strength
• Pain when moving the wrist

Early diagnosis and appropriate management are essential, as some scaphoid fractures can be difficult to detect and may have a slower healing process.

Hand therapists play a key role in rehabilitation, helping athletes and active individuals regain strength, mobility, and confidence to return to sport safely.

🖐️ AHTA Hand Therapy Week: Understanding Volar Plate Injuries 🖐️

Did you know that a “jarred finger” can sometimes be more than just a minor injury?

A volar plate injury occurs when the ligament on the palm side of the finger joint (usually the middle joint, or PIP joint) is stretched or torn. This ligament can also pull away a bony fragment with it also causing an avulsion fracture (see x-ray above). This often happens when the finger is forced backwards during sports, falls, or everyday accidents.
🔍 Common signs:
✔️ Pain and tenderness around the finger joint
✔️ Swelling and bruising
✔️ Difficulty bending or straightening the finger
✔️ Joint instability in more severe cases

💡 Why early treatment matters
Without appropriate management, a volar plate injury can lead to stiffness, deformity, and long-term functional limitations.

🤲 How Hand Therapists Help
Hand therapists play a key role in:
• Assessing the injury
• Fabricating custom splint
• Guiding safe movement and exercises
• Managing swelling and pain
• Supporting a return to sport, and daily activities.

This AHTA Hand Therapy Week, we’re celebrating the expertise of hand therapists in helping people regain movement, function, and confidence after hand and upper limb injuries.

🖐️ AHTA Hand Therapy Week! 🖐️
Spotlight on Mallet Finger Injuries 👇

Did you know a simple knock to the tip of your finger can result in a mallet finger injury?

A mallet finger occurs when the tendon responsible for straightening the end joint of the finger is damaged, causing the fingertip to droop. These injuries are common in sport and early assessment and treatment are key to achieving the best outcome.
🖐️ How can hand therapy help?
✔️ Assessment and diagnosis
✔️ Custom-made splinting to support healing
✔️ Education on protecting the injury during recovery and upon return to sport
✔️ Monitoring progress and adjusting treatment as needed
✔️ Rehabilitation to restore function and movement

During Hand Therapy Week, we’re highlighting the important role hand therapists play in helping people recover from hand and upper limb injuries and return to the activities that matter most.

If you’ve injured your finger and can’t fully straighten the tip, don’t ignore it—early intervention can make all the difference.

📖 Handwriting ✏️

As Hand Therapists, we know that how a child writes is just as important as what they write.
Here are a few tips to support handwriting at home and in the classroom:

🪑 Set up the right environment
• Feet flat on the floor
• Hips, knees and ankles at 90°
• Desk at elbow height

🧍‍♂️ Check posture
• Sit tall with a supported back
• Non-writing hand holding the paper steady

✍️ Support a functional pencil grip
• Tripod or adapted grip if needed
• Pencils that aren’t too thick or too thin

📄 Paper placement matters
• Slight tilt of the paper
• Helps wrist position and letter formation

⏱️ Short, frequent practice beats long sessions
• Build endurance gradually
• Keep it fun and low-pressure!

Strong handwriting skills support confidence, attention, and academic success 📚✨

If your child struggles with handwriting, fatigue, or frustration, a hand therapist can help!

📍 We’re here to support little hands every step of the way.
