RUNNERS KNEE

aka Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

What is it?
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome is pain that is felt at
the front of the knee typically around
the knee cap (patella)

Your patella sits inside the tendon of your quadriceps muscles in and glides along a small groove in the front of your thigh bone (femur)

Tight, overused muscles around the knee can cause the patella to move outside this groove causing pain

Symptoms include:

Pain when kneeling or squatting
Pain walking up or down stairs
Pain when sitting with bent knee for extended periods
Pain is worse when trying to increase activities like running

Causes:
Tightness or weakness in the muscles around the knee (particularly your quadriceps)
Sudden increase in activity level without proper training
Poor running or jumping form

Your therapist can assess your movements and the muscles around the area to determine the potential cause of your knee pain

Followed by using soft tissue release techniques on the muscles around the knee and a comprehensive home exercise plan

SPIKY MASSAGE BALL vs SMOOTH MASSAGE BALL

What's the difference?

Spiky Massage Ball
- Intense, sharp pressure
- Stimulates blood flow
- Good for releasing tight fascia and waking up tired, sluggish muscles

Smooth Massage Ball
- Smooth, even pressure and easier to use
- Good for deep pressure to release trigger points
- Perfect for use in sensitive areas or those with low tolerance to painful stimuli

So.. which should I use?

Honestly? We love both!
Personal preference does play a role in deciding which massage ball is right for you.
Your therapist can help you decide which ball is more suited to you and how to use it so you get the most out of it

TIGHT HAMSTRINGS?

What causes tight hamstrings?
Do you sit at a desk all day?
Do you drive a lot for work?

Lack of movement and sitting for long periods causes our muscles to shorten and feel tight.

Muscle weakness and imbalances.

Weakness in our hamstrings and glutes make our muscles work harder causing them to become tight and restrict movement. This tightness restricts movement in our hips and knees. If your hamstrings are weak, they're working harder than what they're capable of. If your glutes are weak, your hamstrings are working harder than they should be.

What happens if hamstrings are tight?

Tight hamstrings can lead to overuse injuries such as:
- Strains or tears in the muscle belly
- Tendon issues at the hamstring attachment points

So how can Remedial Massage & Myotherapy help?

Your therapist can help work with you to:
- Determine the cause of the tightness
- Assess muscle length and weaknesses
- Use hands on techniques like myofascial release, trigger point therapy, dry needling and cupping to reduce tension
- Create a treatment plan to help address underlying issues that may be causing or prolonging the tightness

Getting on top of the tightness before it becomes an issue is key!
