In palliative care, we spend so much of our time asking, “How are you?”
- We ask our clients.
- We ask their families.
- We listen to their fears, their hopes and what matters most to them.
R U OK? Day reminds us to ask the same question of each other.
Working in palliative care can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also involve grief, loss, difficult conversations, challenging situations and emotional moments. Sometimes we become so focused on caring for others that we forget to check in with ourselves and our colleagues.
Today is a reminder that looking after each other is just as important as looking after those in our care.
A simple “Are you OK?” can open the door to a conversation. A genuine “How are you really going?” can let someone know they don't have to carry something alone.
And sometimes, being there doesn't mean having the right words or fixing the problem. It simply means listening, noticing and being present.
