Quick anatomy. Inside each inner ear are three loop-shaped canals filled with fluid. At the base of each canal sits a membrane with tiny calcium-carbonate crystals.
When you move your head, the fluid moves — the crystals stay put — and your brain reads that signal as 'I'm moving'.
In BPPV, a few crystals come loose and float into one of the canals. Now when you roll over in bed, the fluid sloshes those loose crystals around — and your brain gets a false 'I'm spinning' signal even though you're lying still.
The fix is to manoeuvre the crystals back out of the canal. Specific head movements, specific sequence. Often one session.
