If you're in your 40s or 50s and watching a parent's mobility decline, there are five things worth quietly starting them on — most of them don't require a doctor's visit, and all of them are within their control:
1. The 10-second single-leg balance test, weekly.
2. Sit-to-stand reps from a kitchen chair, 5 a day.
3. A walking pole or properly-set walking stick before they 'need' one.
4. Strength + balance is more important than cardio in this age group.
5. A Healthy Ageing program with someone they trust — early, not late.
