Most of us rarely think about where our tongue sits when we’re not eating or talking.

But resting posture is something Alicia pays close attention to.

At rest, we are looking at how the tongue, lips and jaw naturally position themselves, as well as how someone is breathing.

These seemingly small habits happen for hours every day, which is why understanding them can form an important part of a myofunctional assessment.

Sometimes the first step is simply becoming aware of something you have never thought about before.

You don’t need to have all the answers to start an important conversation.

Sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer someone is the time and space to be heard.

If someone you care about doesn’t seem like themselves, asking “Are you OK?” can be the beginning.

Listen.

Give them room to talk.

And if they are struggling, encourage them to connect with the appropriate support.

A meaningful conversation can start with one question, but what happens after we ask matters too.

An occasional dry mouth in the morning might not mean much.

When it happens regularly, however, it is worth noticing what else is going on.

You might also see:
• Mouth breathing during sleep
• Snoring
• Restless sleep
• Chapped or dry lips
• Waking thirsty

No single sign tells us the whole story.

It is the pattern that matters.

Paying attention to what happens during sleep, and how your child feels when they wake, can give you valuable information to discuss with your healthcare team.

Father’s Day is a chance to celebrate everything dads and father figures do for the people around them.

It can also be a reminder that looking after your own health matters too.

Persistent snoring, waking with a dry mouth, jaw tension, morning headaches or regularly waking feeling unrefreshed are not things that need to be dismissed as simply part of getting older.

If something has become a consistent pattern, it is worth talking about with an appropriate health professional.

Here’s to all the dads, grandfathers and father figures in our community.

Happy Father’s Day.

We often notice breathing when someone is exercising, sleeping or feeling unwell.

But what about when they are simply sitting quietly?

When your child is relaxed, take notice.

Are their lips comfortably together?

Are they breathing through their nose?

Does their mouth tend to stay open even when they are not talking or eating?

One observation doesn’t provide all the answers, but noticing patterns is a valuable place to start.

If something seems consistent, it gives you useful information to discuss with the right health professional.

Spring means longer days, more time outdoors and, for many families, the return of seasonal allergies.

When the nose is regularly congested, children and adults can find themselves relying more on mouth breathing.

Sometimes that settles as allergy symptoms improve. Sometimes the pattern sticks around.

If mouth breathing continues even when the nose is clear, particularly during sleep, it may be worth paying closer attention to what is happening.

Spring is a good opportunity to notice the everyday habits that can influence breathing, sleep and oral function.

It is not always easy to know whether something is simply a habit or a sign worth investigating.

Perhaps your child snores.

Maybe they regularly breathe through their mouth.

You may have concerns about tongue posture, swallowing, thumb sucking or orthodontic relapse.

Or perhaps you are an adult experiencing jaw tension, headaches or poor-quality sleep.

At My Myo Matters, the first step is understanding the full pattern rather than treating one sign in isolation.

Alicia provides personalised support and can help identify when another health professional or referral may also need to be involved.

You do not need to have all the answers before making contact.

Sometimes it starts with a conversation.

Living outside the immediate area does not necessarily mean every appointment has to involve a long drive.

My Myo Matters ideally begins with a face-to-face appointment so Alicia can complete the initial assessment in person.

Depending on the individual care plan, appointments between the first and final visits may then be completed through telehealth.

These sessions can provide personalised guidance, exercise support and progress reviews from home.

A final face-to-face appointment is also ideal for reviewing progress and completing the therapy journey.

It is a flexible approach designed to make consistent care more accessible while maintaining the value of in-person assessment.

When a child snores, mouth breathes, sleeps restlessly or seems unusually tired during the day, a family may be advised to investigate their sleep.

But children are not simply smaller adults.

Their breathing, development and sleep patterns require age appropriate assessment.

For children under 16, families should seek professional advice about a properly assessed paediatric sleep study rather than relying on a general pharmacy or adult home sleep test.

The right assessment can provide more meaningful information and help guide appropriate referrals or next steps.

My Myo Matters can help families recognise the patterns that may be worth discussing with their GP, paediatrician, ENT or other treating professional.

Orthodontic treatment can move teeth into a healthier position.

But what happens around the teeth also matters.

The tongue, lips, cheeks and swallowing muscles apply pressure throughout the day and night.

Patterns such as tongue thrust, low tongue posture, mouth breathing or an altered swallow may continue placing pressure against the teeth after orthodontic treatment has finished.

This does not mean myofunctional therapy replaces retainers or orthodontic care.

It may form part of a broader plan to address the muscle patterns and oral habits surrounding the teeth.

Supporting both structure and function can help give orthodontic results the best possible foundation.
