BHFLHN medical officer Dr Bosco Lawrence chose the Single Employer Model because it provided the stability and support he was looking for while pursuing a career in rural general practice.

As part of his training, Dr Lawrence is currently undertaking a community placement at Tanunda Medical Centre in the Barossa Valley. Experiences like this help develop the rural medical workforce that regional communities rely on to access care close to home.

"One of the barriers to general practice is the uncertainty around income and the business side of running a practice. The Single Employer Model provides stability while you're training."

For Dr Lawrence, one of the greatest rewards of rural medicine is the opportunity to build strong relationships with patients and communities.

"Patients trust you, and because it's a smaller community, you build genuine relationships. That's incredibly rewarding."

One family's decision changed countless lives.

In 2015, Dr Shyamsundar Muthuramalingam, Director, Clinical Research and Teletrials, received a life-saving kidney transplant thanks to the generosity of a donor family.

🏥 Look how far we've come at Mount Barker.

Our latest drone footage shows the incredible progress being made on the new Mount Barker Hospital. The building façade is nearing completion, the new multi deck car park is now open, and construction remains on track for a late 2027 opening.

Every milestone brings us closer to delivering expanded healthcare services and more care close to home for our growing community.

One conversation could save a life.

DonateLife Week may be over, but the impact of organ donation lasts a lifetime.

For BHFLHN staff member Theresa Tucker, the impact of donation is deeply personal.

Theresa, Day Centre Coordinator at Gumeracha and Mount Pleasant and Volunteer Coordinator at Mount Barker Hospital, donated a kidney to her daughter Hannah almost four years ago. Hannah had previously received two heart transplants.

Today, Hannah has returned to full-time work, enjoys spending time with family and friends, and is preparing to compete in this year's Transplant Australia Games.

"I feel incredibly blessed and deeply grateful for these moments because there was a very real time when they weren't guaranteed," Hannah said.

"Even now, when I feel healthy and well, I'm still aware of how fragile life can be. It shapes the way I choose to live. I say yes to opportunities, make time for the people I love and try not to postpone joy."

For Theresa, sharing their story is about helping others understand the difference donation can make.

"It is an opportunity to spread the word about organ donation and the gift of life it has given not only to Hannah, but to our whole family," Theresa said.

👶 This World Breastfeeding Week (1–7 August), we're recognising the 2026 theme, "Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life: Strengthen what works."

At BHFLHN, we're committed to building on proven approaches that help families achieve their feeding goals and give babies the best possible start in life.

🤰 Since launching the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) at Mount Barker in late 2025, more families have had access to continuity of care with a known midwife throughout pregnancy, birth and early parenting. Alongside our Midwifery Antenatal Postnatal Care (MAPCare) pathway, this family-centred model helps ensure parents receive the care and guidance they need throughout their breastfeeding journey.

As part of our commitment to strengthening breastfeeding outcomes, we're actively supporting the strategies recommended by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action - WABA by:

💙 informing stakeholders through breastfeeding audits, data collection and monitoring progress
💙 anchoring breastfeeding support through the review and development of policies and procedures
💙 engaging with consumers and partners, including the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) and CAFHS, to strengthen support networks
💙 galvanising quality improvement initiatives, monitoring feedback and using learnings to guide ongoing breastfeeding activities.

As a Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI Australia) accredited health network, we're proud to support families and strengthen what works for healthier futures.

Gawler Health Service is looking for volunteers to join our Community Transport Volunteer Program. 🚗💙

As a Volunteer Driver, you'll use a government vehicle to safely transport clients to and from their medical appointments, helping them access essential healthcare services and receive care close to home.

This rewarding role is a great way to give back while making a real difference to people who may otherwise struggle to attend their appointments.

We're looking for volunteers who have:
✅ a current, unrestricted Full Driver's Licence
✅ compassion, patience and reliability
✅ good communication skills

Volunteer onboarding includes:
• application and immunisation record review
• blood test and any required immunisations (provided)
• interview
• National Police Check (clear result required)
• mandatory training
