Thinking about EMDR but not sure how to get started?

One of the most common questions we hear is, "Do I need a referral?"

The answer is not necessarily.

You can:

✔️ Ask your GP for a Mental Health Treatment Plan if you're eligible for Medicare rebates, or

✔️ Or access EMDR privately. If you have private health insurance, you may be able to claim benefits depending on your level of cover. Simply email us a brief outline of your situation and we'll forward it to the psychologist, who will review your enquiry and advise whether EMDR may be an appropriate treatment for you.

Before beginning EMDR, your psychologist will either review your referral or, if you don't have one, take the time to understand your situation, history and goals. This initial assessment helps determine whether EMDR is the most appropriate therapy for your needs.

Michelle Cairns, Psychologist, provides EMDR therapy from our Mount Eliza practice.

If you'd like to learn more or discuss whether EMDR could be suitable for you, our team is here to help.

💙 Men’s Health Week | Fact #1

3 in 4 suicides are men. Behind every number is someone who was a son, a partner, a dad, a mate.

It’s a difficult reality, and for many men, the struggle often happens quietly. Too many carry things on their own for too long.

If something doesn’t feel right, please don’t wait. A conversation with your GP or health professional can be the first step toward getting support.

If this post reaches you at the right time, or reminds you of someone you care about, please share it. Sometimes awareness is the start of change.

💙 Men's Health Week | Men's Mental Health Fact #7

A healthy lifestyle supports mental health too.

Regular movement, quality sleep, time outdoors and social connection all play an important role in mental wellbeing.

Small daily habits can have a big impact.

Make a date. When will you have your next health check?

This Men’s Health Week, remember that looking after your health includes your mental health.

If you’ve been feeling stressed, anxious, overwhelmed or simply not yourself, don’t wait. Talk to your GP. Support is available, and asking for help is a sign of strength.

Did you know Medicare may help cover the cost of psychology appointments?

A Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) is prepared by your GP and may provide access to Medicare rebates for up to 10 psychology sessions each calendar year.

Here’s how it works:

✔ Book an appointment with your GP and let them know you’d like to discuss a Mental Health Treatment Plan, as a longer appointment may be required
✔ Your GP may prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan
✔ Receive a referral to a psychologist
✔ Review your progress with your GP after your initial sessions

If you need support beyond your Medicare-rebated sessions, you can continue seeing your psychologist through self-funded appointments or use private health insurance if available.

🌿 Taking the first step can feel difficult, but support is available.
