Just like ticking off a daily exercise quota, it's wise to set aside time to achieve the minimum dietary requirements for our meals.

By agreeing on a bare minimum for our daily intake of vegetables, we can help keep our well-being on track.

We can start with a baseline for our vegetable intake of at least five portions over two main meals.

Current dietary recommendations are for vegetables to make up around half to a third of meal portions, especially for those wishing to maintain a healthy weight.

Regular consumption of vegetables may protect us against diabetes, heart disease and other chronic conditions and, at the very least, provides a balance for pasta, grains, meat and dairy intake.

Beyond incorporating lots of leafy greens and raw vegetables, we can add legumes such as beans, lentils and chickpeas to meals.

Although a common condition, gastroenteritis, otherwise known as ‘Gastro’, generally lasts for the short term.

Gastroenteritis causes vomiting and diarrhoea, triggered by the infection and inflammation of the digestive tract.

Although we may associate gastroenteritis with poor food choices, its potential origins are more commonly viral than bacterial or parasitic.

Viral gastroenteritis is often called stomach flu, and all types are spread by those already infected or contaminated food, drinking water and recreational water sources, such as pools.

Although the types and sources of gastroenteritis vary, we can practice a layer of protection to help avoid them all.

The gold standard to limit exposure to gastroenteritis is washing our hands thoroughly for 20 to 30 seconds with soap and water.

To further protect ourselves, we can ensure those under our care do the same, especially children.

We can instil in children the healthy habits of hand washing after handling a pet, playing outside, going to the toilet and before eating or preparing food.

When someone already has gastroenteritis, we can prevent the spread by wearing gloves if taking care of them and disinfecting surfaces using hot water containing a detergent or bleach.

Bones are living tissue, constantly in a state of renewal, so building and maintaining bones should begin early in life.

Encouraging kids to maintain a daily routine for bone health is the current focus of Healthy Bones Action Week.

Regular weight-bearing exercise, a healthy diet, and sun exposure to maintain Vitamin D are essential for encouraging bone health at any age.

Beyond milk, cheese and yoghurt, we can optimise our intake of bone-building calcium by including sardines and other small b***d fish in our diets.

For vegetable-based options, we can eat more collard greens, broccoli, and kale, along with almonds, one of the highest in calcium of all nuts.

A comprehensive approach is required to meet the health needs of women through all stages of their lives.

National Stroke Week is on now, encouraging us to recognise and act upon the signs of stoke through an easy to remember FAST prompt for the following:

Face: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
Arms: Can they lift both arms?
Speech: Is speech slurred? Do they understand you?
Time: This Is critical. If you see any of these signs, please call 000 straight away.

The last prompt is essential as there is an increased potential for stroke-related brain damage the longer a stroke remains untreated.

By sharing knowledge, support and resources, The Stroke Foundation aims to help prevent strokes from occurring and aid in the recovery process for those who have experienced a stroke.

Your GP can compliment these proactive measures by providing a health check and helping to manage risk factors such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.
