Join us for the Margot Prior Public Lecture: 'School Can't: What Children's Absence from School Is Trying to Tell Us,' presented by Emma Spencer FAPS, a Clinical Psychologist and CEO of Spencer Health.

Emma will unpack why anxiety, shutdown, avoidance and aggression around school may be adaptive responses, not problems to extinguish, and how a developmental, attachment-informed lens can help clinicians see the child's intention, behind the behaviour.

Drawing on emerging research into post-pandemic trends, this lecture will explore the changing landscape of school attendance difficulties and the factors contributing to their increasing prevalence. Through a developmental, attachment-informed and formulation-based lens, participants will consider how behaviours commonly seen in children experiencing school distress, including anxiety, emotional dysregulation, shutdown, aggression and avoidance, may represent adaptive responses to underlying needs rather than behaviours to be extinguished.
