What is RSV?

This has been a popular question among parents as we hear increasing news stories about this virus.

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a common respiratory virus that we typically see every winter. It causes similar symptoms to a common cold like a runny nose and a cough.

Most cases of RSV can be treated at home, as you would with the flu or COVID. If you are concerned about your child’s breathing, or they are only drinking very small amounts, contact your health professional for advice.

If your child is experiencing any cold, flu or COVID-19 like symptoms and you cannot see your regular GP, free appointments are available at GP respiratory clinics (GPRCs) across Victoria.

The Victorian Virtual Emergency Department is another public health service available for non life-threatening emergencies: https://www.nh.org.au/virtual-emergency-department/

If your child is experiencing any cold, flu or COVID-19 like symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever or sore throat and you cannot see your regular GP, free appointments are available at GP respiratory clinics (GPRCs) across Victoria.

Your local GPRC can help plan to manage asthma and bronchitis this winter, offering comprehensive, face-to-face assessments to help your child stay well.

GPRCs are there to provide patients with access to assessment for all respiratory symptoms, testing and treatment close to where you live.

Of course if your child is critically ill, you should call 000 or take them to your local hospital ED.

The spirit of Anzac, with its qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice remain deeply embedded in our national identity. Today we honour the sacrifices of those who have served, their loved ones and those we have lost, then and now. Lest we forget.

Children aged 5 to 11 can receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine from 10 January 2022. They will receive a smaller dose of vaccine created specifically for their age group.

Young people with a disability or special requirements can choose to get vaccinated at a vaccination centre with enhanced features, including on-site hearing augmentation devices and communication tools.

Appointments are not necessary for children with a disability, although vaccination centres can organise an Auslan interpreter or Disability Liaison Officers if you make an appointment.
