July is Sarcoma Awareness Month. 💛

Sarcoma is a rare and complex group of cancers, with more than 70 different subtypes. Because of this, early diagnosis and referral to a specialist team can make a real difference.

As Dr Karan Gupta, Medical Oncologist here at Tasman Health Care, shares:

"Early referral to a specialist sarcoma centre or an oncologist with expertise in sarcoma is vital because multidisciplinary specialist care consistently leads to better patient outcomes. Encouragingly, advances in molecular profiling, targeted therapies and immunotherapy are moving us beyond the traditional one-size-fits-all approach to treatment and offering new hope through increasingly personalised care."

Discover the vital role your lymphatic system plays in keeping you healthy! 🌿✨

This network of vessels, nodes, and organs carries lymph fluid, filters out pathogens, and maintains fluid balance. Without a pump, it relies on your movement and breathing to keep things flowing. Regular exercise and mindful breathing are key to supporting this essential system. Stay active and let your body thrive! 💪🧘‍♀️

Radiation fibrosis is the progressive stiffening and thickening of healthy tissue caused by radiation therapy. It occurs when the body's healing process overreacts to radiation, forming excessive scar tissue. It is a common late effect of breast cancer treatment, often appearing months to years after therapy.

Unfortunately, Radiation Fibrosis can very painful and immobilising for some patients. Although it's very difficult to reverse, there are a number of treatment modalities we can try to help improve symptoms.

Lymphoedema management is the treatment and care used to reduce swelling caused by a buildup of lymph fluid, usually in an arm, leg, or other body part when the lymphatic system is damaged or not working properly.

The main goals of lymphoedema management are to:

Reduce swelling
Prevent infections
Improve movement and function
Maintain quality of life

Common management approaches include:

Compression therapy – using bandages or compression garments to help move lymph fluid.
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) – a specialized gentle massage technique that encourages lymph flow.
Exercise – specific movements that help lymph drainage and maintain mobility.
Skin care – keeping the skin clean and moisturized to reduce the risk of infection.
