Did you know that physical inactivity is a risk factor for many chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease?

Research indicates that prolonged sitting (more than eight hours per day) combined with no physical activity is associated with a mortality risk similar to that of obesity or smoking^. Scary, right?

Fortunately, it’s easy to make small changes to your lifestyle to mitigate this risk.

Exercise is beneficial for many reasons, but one of those reasons is its positive impact on your heart health.

However if you have a heart condition, it can be difficult to know how to start exercising safely.

Our biggest tips are:

1. Seek medical advice first.

2. Start gradually.

3. Choose the right type of exercise.

4. Seek expert support.

Did you know Heart Week is recognised from 4th – 10th May?

Heart Week aims to raise awareness about heart disease and encourage Australians to take small but meaningful steps towards improving heart health.

Exercise is a widely recognised way to improve your heart health. This week, why not set yourself a challenge to get a bit more active?

Some easy ways to incorporate more activity could be:

- Walk, run or cycle to work
- Walk to school with your kids
- Visit our clinic for a strength training session or group class
- Go for a walk when you have free time

If you’re not sure how to get started, come and visit us to talk to one of our friendly clinicians. We have expertise in designing safe and effective exercise.

Today, we recognise World Day for Safety and Health at Work.
This day, recognised by the United Nations, aims to prevent accidents and diseases at work.
As Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists, we assist numerous patients every week with recovering from work-related injuries, prepare to return to the work, and complete workplace assessments with an aim to reduce the risk of injury.
Our clinic team are proud to support our patients across all facets of life, and we’re here where you need us.

You may have heard it said that exercise can help to improve your mental health. But did you know that research continues to show the positive effects exercise has on mental health?

Research shows that being active can boost your mental health—helping with depression and anxiety almost as much as therapy or medication.

Pretty incredible, right?

While school holidays are the perfect time of year for road trips, these long journeys in the car may leave you feeling stiff.

Here are three easy stretches you could try. We suggest stopping every 90 minutes to have a movement break.

1. Hip flexor stretch

Step one foot back into a gentle lunge, keep your chest tall and gently push your hips forward to feel a stretch at the front of the of your back leg.

2. Hamstring stretch

Rest one heel on a curb or step. While keeping your leg straight, hinge forward from your hips to stretch the back of the leg.

3. Standing spinal twist

Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart. Gently twist your upper body to one side while keeping your hips facing forward. Stop when you feel a light stretch through your back, then return to centre and repeat on the other side.

Hold each stretch for as long as feels comfortable, move slowly, and listen to your body. Stop immediately if you feel any pain, and consult a physiotherapist for more individualised advice.Stay safe on the roads!
