My herbal companions. The type of medicines that our species have evolved along side. The roots, leaves, flowers, barks and seeds that offer signposts to our bodies, guiding us to heal ourselves and preventing dis-ease. ❤️

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

When most of us think of licorice, we think of a confectionery. But the original licorice was boiled out of this root and used in traditional herbal medicine for thousands of years. Licorice is a wonderfully versatile herb with applications across many organ systems. As a mucoprotective and demulcent, it is perfect for gastritis and peptic ulcers. As an expectorant and antitussive, it’s fantastic for soothing a cough, bronchitis and getting congestion out of our lungs. As an adrenal tonic, it’s really helpful in physical stress and adrenal depletion. It’s soothing and healing on mouth ulcers, herpes and dermatitis, as well as being supportive in withdrawal from corticosteroid medication. It can even relieve constipation. Licorice is wonderful (and delicious).
But there are a few safety considerations to be mindful of. Licorice can also elevate blood pressure. This could be useful in those of us with low blood pressure, but definitely not appropriate for people with high blood pressure, medicated or not. In fact generally caution in the elderly and people with heart, liver or kidney issues is recommended. As well as those with oedema or taking diuretics, laxatives and some heart medications.
Herbal medicine is natural but it can still come with risks. It’s always worth talking to your practitioner to work out what is best for you.
As a side note, these roots are so good for teething babies to chew on when their teeth are cutting through. The more they chew, the better the roots taste 🥰

Hiking is such good medicine for my nervous system. It flips the usual mental:physical load ration. It’s low mental load (we’re just walking and enjoying nature, away from all other routines and responsibilities) and high physical load (carrying everything you need for a few days remote hiking in your back, plus an occasional toddler). It feels more like the way we’ve evolved to be…not always thinking but always either moving or relaxed…brain quiet, body on.
I just did my first multi day hike since becoming a mum and it was wonderful. Through hikes have long been one of my favourite things to do. The fact that I can now share them with my 2 year old, is pure joy.
and thank you so much for your support 🙏🏼

Decadent Gluten Free Chocolate Cake

Add 6tbs butter, 3/4cup coconut sugar and 3 eggs to a large bowl. Combined until creamy.
Add 3tbs cacao, 1tsp of cinnamon, 2tsp vanilla extract and 3tsp of baking powder. Stir thoroughly.
Add 1 cup of almond meal and 1cup of buckwheat flour and fold it all together.
Finally add 1cup of milk of choice and stir to form a batter.
Add the batter to a lined cake tine and bake at 180 centigrade for about 45mins or until the skewer comes out clean.

This is seriously so delicious. This was a birthday cake made in haste for a friend, so topped with some flowers from the garden instead of icing. But it was goooood ☺️
