This is one of the biggest public health wins of our lifetime. šŸ™šŸ»ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

A new national report from the Centre for Research Excellence in Cervical Cancer Control shows Australia is on track to become the world’s first country to eliminate cervical cancer by 2035.

Cases in women under 25 have already dropped to zero, survival rates are climbing, and self-collection has opened screening access for under-screened groups.

The only challenge now: HPV vaccinations and screening rates have dipped, and keeping momentum matters.

But the path is there, and it’s working.

Australia’s progress shows what sustained HPV vaccination, regular cervical screening, early detection, and strong public-health programs can achieve. If elimination is reached, it could provide a powerful model for other countries working to dramatically reduce—and eventually eliminate—cervical cancer as a public health problem.

Every single feed of breast milk is valuable.

The first milk you make is called colostrum. From the first feed, colostrum lines your baby's tummy for protection against illness and infection, gives them an energy boost and helps them pass meconium – a black, sticky, tar-like substance you should see in your baby's first nappy.

Your new baby has a tiny tummy and colostrum's small volumes help your baby to feed frequently. This helps your body to build your milk supply and produce the right amount of milk for your baby.

If you and your baby are separated for any reason after birth, you can help to get your breastfeeding Off to a Good Start by starting to hand express early - ideally within 1 hour of birth but if that isn't possible, as soon as you are well enough to do so.

The colostrum you collect can be offered to your baby in a number of different ways. Staff will discuss the options with you and help you to protect your milk supply.

Our theaters have Liquid Gold, breastmilk expression kits to help you get expressing early and frequently.

Got any questions about colostrum?

Remember you don't need to wait until your baby has arrived, you can discuss breastfeeding and expressing with your Midwife , Family Nurse and our Breastfeeding Peer Supporters.

Does inducing labor increase cesarean risk? New research in midwifery-led settings offers important insight.
In a large cohort study of over 7,000 term births, labor induction, including elective induction at 39 weeks: was not associated with higher cesarean birth rates compared to expectant management. Outcomes like postpartum hemorrhage, neonatal status, and NICU admissions were also similar across groups.
What stood out? Care context matters. Midwifery-led, collaborative practice models may play a key role in supporting vaginal birth, even when labor is induced.
As induction rates continue to rise, understanding how care practices shape outcomes is critical for informed, patient-centered decision-making.
