So many women go into pregnancy expecting to just get through it.

The nausea. The exhaustion. The weeks where you question everything. They file it all under ‘this is just pregnancy’, and keep going.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Yes, a lot of it is ‘normal’, but just because it’s normal doesn’t mean it has to be unsupported.

What I see in clinic - and what I experienced myself in my own pregnancies - is that when women actually understand what their body is doing and why, there’s a huge shift. Everything makes sense, and the hard weeks feel survivable because there’s an explanation for them, and a plan.

If you’re in your third trimester and you’re struggling, or if you just want to feel more supported and informed through what’s ahead, book a free 10-minute chat with me. Link in bio.

Here’s last month’s report - some of it clinical, some of it just life - but that’s just how I live it, side by side, with two sweet boys tagging along always 💫

If anything here sparked a question - the vaginal microbiome testing, the tulsi, whatever - my DMs are always open x

Everyone talks about magnesium in pregnancy. Hardly anyone talks about sodium.

Your blood volume expands by up to 50% during pregnancy - and sodium is the primary driver of that expansion. Without adequate sodium, your body simply cannot build the blood volume it needs to support you and your baby. Poor blood volume expansion is linked to gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, low amniotic fluid, and poor fetal growth.

Most women are under the impression they should be limiting their salt intake during pregnancy, and that advice needs a reframe.

When I’m looking for a good electrolyte, here’s what I check:

- Sodium is the highest mineral on the label - not just present, but dominant
- Correct ratio of sodium, potassium, and magnesium
- No maltodextrin
- No artificial sweeteners
- Minimal ingredients, no colours, no numbers

My favourite brand is Sodii (the salty citrus is my go-to, but I’ll happily drink any of them, and the unflavoured is great in a smoothie) and, I also really like Ancient Lakes Magnesium Essential Electrolytes, for my more sensitive clients.

Not all electrolytes are created equal - feel free to DM me if you want to know the ones I personally avoid and why x

Most of the women I see going into pregnancy prep aren’t sick, and they’re not struggling. They feel completely fine. But feeling fine and being prepared for one of the most physiologically demanding things your body will ever do aren’t the same thing - and that gap is exactly where this work lives.

So how does a clinical herbalist actually help? We look at your cycle, your nutrient status, your stress response, your history - and we’re thorough about it, reading your bloodwork properly rather than glancing to check it’s “in range.” Because the three months before you start trying (or six, if you can swing it) is genuinely the window that moves the needle most.

This is the first in a series on how a clinical herbalist can support you - preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum.

The frustration is real. You know something is off. You’ve done the tests. And yet there you are, with a printout full of normal ranges and no answers.

Most standard fertility workups are designed to rule out serious pathology. They’re not designed to optimise. And there’s a significant gap between those two things.

The tests in this carousel are some of the investigations I find most useful when supporting women preconception - not every woman needs every test, and this list isn’t exhaustive, but whether you’ve been trying for two weeks or two years, you don’t have to be struggling to benefit from knowing your baseline.

If you’re curious about what I’d prioritise for you specifically, book a free 10 minute chat via the link in my bio and we can start from there x

I’ve had a bit of time away from Instagram, and here’s the honest truth of where I’ve been: I’m a mum to two little ones, and my youngest is still a year off starting daycare. Most of my days are me and my boys, which is a genuinely incredible thing to get to do. But I also love my work - and for a while I was trying to squeeze consults in wherever I could, nap times and after bedtime mainly, which might sound efficient but was actually really stressful.

So I turned off my booking system, and took some time to figure out a better way. And here it is: consults are now Saturdays only - less availability, but far better for my boys, and gentler on my nervous system.

I support women through preconception, pregnancy and postpartum, with herbal and nutritional medicine, alongside the conventional model, not instead of it.

If you’ve been wanting to reach out, my books are open again, and I’d love to hear from you. There’s a free 10 minute chat available at various times through the week if you want to see whether we’re a good fit - or you can go straight to booking a Saturday consult, whichever feels right for you. Both options are available in my bio x

Mudcrab 💫 our best boy, and the heart of our home. Forever under my feet, gently nudging us through the hard times, watching over the most beautiful ones, and always happiest when cuddling. The house feels empty without him, and we are heartbroken 💔
