Most Australians polled (90%) say that sight is their most valued sense.
Around 90% of all blindness and vision impairment in Australia is preventable or treatable if detected early.

The same logic applies to getting our cars serviced regularly - the mechanic's advanced warning hopefully heads of an expensive repair bill if left untreated.

Lens Tech Talk: Transition vs. Photochromic – Is there a difference?

Photochromic: is the general name for the amazing technology. It describes lenses that change from clear to dark when exposed to UV or visible light. This amazing science dates back to the 1960s!

Red green colour vision deficiency is possibly the most common version and quite often goes unnoticed.
Unfortunately people do not always realise they see colour differently, because it's always appeared that way. It can become more obvious when performing tasks like reading colour-coded charts, recognising traffic lights at a distance, or choosing matching clothes. A screening test at your next eye exam can quickly show what type and severity you have. One more reason to get your eyes checked.

The 150 year old mystery of John Dalton's Eyes, involving stockings, blue vitreous humour (inner-eye-ball-fluid), donated eyes, and DNA.
In 1794, atomic pioneer John Dalton realized he saw colours differently after buying his mother bright red stockings that he thought were blue.
He believed the fluid in his eyes was tinted blue, filtering out red light. To prove it, he left his eyes to science. But when he died in 1844, his doctor dissected them and found the fluid was completely clear.
The real answer took another 150 years. In 1995, scientists extracted DNA from Dalton’s preserved retinal tissue.

The verdict?
He was a deuteranope, he completely lacked the gene for green-sensitive photopigments. To Dalton, red sealing wax and green leaves both looked like a muted olive-brown.

Did you know colour vision differences often run in families?
The most common type (red–green) is usually passed down on the X chromosome. Because men have one X, they’re more likely to be affected. Women have two X chromosomes, so they’re less likely to have a strong colour vision problem, but they can still carry, and sometimes notice milder changes in how they see colour.

Do you have a relative with colour blindness? It’s a good idea to have an eye exam and let your optometrist know when they ask about medical history.
