💜 Community making a difference! 💜

When Ange & Lill signed up for the Voltaren City2Surf, they set themselves a fundraising goal of $500.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of their family, friends and local community, they have now raised over $2,000, more than four times their original goal! 👏

To celebrate, they've created this beautiful graphic to thank everyone who has supported them while also shining a light on why Alzheimer's research is so important.

We were delighted to welcome Western Australia’s Chief Scientist, Sharath Sriram, to Alzheimer’s Research Australia for a tour of our world-class research facilities at the Ralph and Patricia Sarich Neuroscience Research Institute.

During the visit, members of our executive and research leadership team showcased the breadth of being undertaken at ARA and highlighted the collaborative partnerships that are driving innovation in Alzheimer's disease and dementia research.

The tour was led by our Director of Research, Professor Ralph Martins, Chief Executive Officer Professor Vicky Vass, and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Taddei, alongside key members of our research team, including Dr Binosha Fernando, Dr Steve Pedrini, Dr Prashant Bharadwaj, Dr Eugene Hone, and Dr Prita Riana Asih.

Discussions focused on the strong relationships ARA has developed with leading national and international research partners, including collaborators at RMIT University, such as Professor Catherine Itsiopoulos. We also explored current and emerging areas of Alzheimer's disease research, opportunities to clinical trials, and the importance of translating scientific discoveries into meaningful outcomes for people living with .

We thank Professor Sharath Sriram for taking the time to visit ARA and for their interest in the ground breaking research being conducted in Western Australia. We look forward to continuing conversations about the future of dementia research and innovation.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of our Director of Research, Professor Ralph Martins, as the inaugural Endowed Chair of Alzheimer’s Research at The University of Western Australia, made possible through a $6 million partnership between The University of Western Australia, Alzheimer’s Research Australia, and the Lions Alzheimer's Foundation.

This appointment marks a significant in advancing Alzheimer’s research in Australia and reflects a shared commitment to improving outcomes for individuals and families affected by dementia.

Professor Martins is internationally recognised for his four decades of pioneering , including leading in early detection through blood-based biomarkers, with the potential to enable accessible and cost-effective diagnostic tools.

This milestone represents an important step forward in accelerating research, strengthening collaboration, and driving progress in prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Alzheimer’s Research Australia is deeply saddened by the passing of Bryant Stokes AO, who died on Friday, aged 89.

Professor Stokes made an unparalleled contribution to health in Western Australia and beyond as an internationally respected neurosurgeon, leader, and advocate for and excellence in patient care.

Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Stokes was driven by a passion for improving outcomes for patients and strengthening collaboration across the health and research sectors. His vision and commitment helped shape neurological research in this state and supported the development of future generations of clinicians and researchers.

Professor Stokes also played a significant role in advancing neuroscience research through his longstanding involvement with organisations, including Alzheimer’s Research Australia, where his leadership and advocacy were instrumental in fostering collaboration and supporting our tenancy at the Ralph and Patricia Sarich Neuroscience Building.

Professor Ralph Martins AO, Director of Research at Alzheimer’s Research Australia, said:

“Bryant’s longstanding support played a pivotal role in advancing our research. He was a committed advocate for our work and instrumental in enabling our transition to the world-class facilities at the Ralph and Patricia Sarich Neuroscience Institute. In honour of his legacy, we will continue our efforts toward a future where Alzheimer’s is a distant memory. Rest in peace, Bryant.”

His legacy will be felt across the health, medical research, and broader community for many years to come.

On behalf of Alzheimer’s Research Australia, we extend our deepest condolences to Professor Stokes’ family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched.

Good Luck to Andrew and the Team - Riding 500km for Alzheimer’s Research Australia!

Tomorrow, Alzheimer’s Research Australia Ambassador Andrew Lester and a group of dedicated riders will set off on an incredible 500 km jet ski challenge, raising vital funds and for research.

This ride is deeply personal, inspired by Andrew’s father and the many families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. His passion and energy have already inspired countless supporters, helping push the team well past their initial goal and towards a new target of $15,500. Over the past two years, their efforts have raised more than $20,000 in total for dementia research.

Every dollar donated goes directly to Alzheimer’s Research Australia, supporting groundbreaking work into early detection, prevention, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. All fuel and expenses are covered by the riders themselves , so every contribution truly makes a difference.

We’d like to recognise the incredible people and businesses making this ride possible. Riders: Ricky, Kevin, Dan, Josh, Dave, Steve, Alex, Dimitri, Adam, Kane, Sally, Jon and Joe. Support crew: Mark and his daughter Liz, who will be driving alongside the riders for the entire journey.

Thank You, Niall!

Alzheimer’s Research Australia would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Niall for his incredible fundraising efforts in support of dementia research.

Motivated by a passion to make a difference, Niall not only shared a powerful message about the importance of protecting the mind, but he also went above and beyond, raising more than $7,000 to advance our research into Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

His creativity, enthusiasm, and community spirit, including his bold decision to go pink after surpassing his fundraising goal, have inspired us all.

World Alzheimer’s Day – September 21

This year’s World Alzheimer’s Month invites all of us to do something simple but powerful: Ask About Dementia. Ask About Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s disease remains the most common form of dementia, now the leading cause of death in Australia. It is progressive: memory, thinking and behaviour gradually change, and daily life becomes harder.

In 2025, we have seen encouraging treatment advances. We are also witnessing new research pushing the frontier in early diagnosis, prevention, and biomarkers, tools that may help us spot Alzheimer’s before symptoms emerge.

But a breakthrough isn’t enough without awareness. Misconceptions and stigma still prevent many from seeking help early, from asking questions, and from accessing support. This is why asking matters.
It opens a door to diagnosis, to care, to hope.

At Alzheimer’s Research Australia, we are committed to world-class research into prevention, early detection, and treatment. We believe every conversation, every question, every donation, and every person involved moves us closer to better outcomes, and ultimately a cure.
